h, sometimes it’s better to keep things lite on the fat and calories 💪! That’s the goal of the miniature playlists gracing The Musical Hype.  On 3 or 4 BOPS, we select a topic or theme, choose three or four relevant songs, and provide a lit 🔥, electrifying blurb.  3 or 4 BOPS shouldn’t take too much time to consume – typically 5 minutes or less!  On the 2nd edition of 3 or 4 BOPS (2022), we select awesome songs that are associated with HORSES 🐎 in some form or fashion.  Without further ado, let the BOPS begin!

1. Ginuwine, “Pony”

💿 Ginuwine…the Bachelor 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment • 🗓 1996

Ginuwine, Ginuwine... the Bachelor [📷: Sony Music Entertainment]“If we’re gonna get nasty baby / First we’ll show and tell / Till I reach your ponytail.” Woo! Early on in his career, 🎙 Ginuwine (Elgin Lumpkin) 😍 got us all hot and bothered singing about his 🎵 “Pony”.  Yes, his pony is exactly what you suspect it is – his penis! The most memorable part of this 1996 gem from 💿 Ginuwine…the Bachelor is – drum roll please – the chorus! Of course, it is because this is where this stud encourages her to giddy up! Yeehaw!

“If you’re horny, let’s do it, ride it, my pony

My saddle’s waitin’, come and jump on it.”

With those looks and that lustful invitation, who could resist that ride? Besides the chorus, Ginuwine sets up his horniness on the verses.  In the first, he’s searching for a rider and asserts, “Girl, when I break you off / I promise that you won’t wanna get off.” The second is steamier: “Send chills up and down your spine / Juices flowing down your thigh.” In addition to all this big dick energy Lumpkin serves up, notably, 🎛 Timbaland famously produced this top ten Billboard Hot 100 hit.  “Pony” is a prime example of the producer at his finest. Also, worth mentioning, “Pony” got an incredibly sexy music Video 🎶📼 – fitting.  I mean, a dancing Ginuwine with his shirt open…nuff said! I did mention Lumpkin was a handsome man, right?

2. SOPHIE, “Ponyboy”

💿 OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES • 🏷 MSMSMSM INC / Future Classic • 📅 2018

SOPHIE, OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES [📷: MSMSMSM INC / Future Classic]“Lock up the door / Put the pony on all fours / Crackdown the whip / Make the pony bite the bit.” Sadly, Scottish musician 🎙 SOPHIE (Sophie Xeon) died from a tragic accident on January 30, 2021.  That day, a brilliant musician was lost.  SOPHIE exemplified the forward-thinking, progressive musician, something you can hear clearly on 🎵 “Ponyboy.” “Ponyboy” appears on her 2018 album, 💿 OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES.  The album earned her a 🏆 Grammy nomination which was historic considering she’s the rare trans musician to be nominated.

Focusing on “Ponyboy,” what makes it so awesome?  First and foremost, it’s the decadent ear candy it serves up.  The production is epic, contrasting so much other music currently out.  The minute you hear “Ponyboy,” it ‘hits different.’  Besides the backdrop, handled exclusively by the gifted musician, the vocals are ear-catching too.  SOPHIE performs alongside 🎙 Cecil Believe, who co-writes (“He is just a pony / She is just a pony / They is just a pony”).  All genders covered! Are the lyrics really about the animal? Of course not, but the -boy added to the title should tell you that.  As expected, “Ponyboy” isn’t the cleanest, most family-friendly record you’ll ever hear:

“Spit on my face

Put the pony on in his place

I am your toy

Just a little ponyboy.”

3. The Rolling Stones, “Wild Horses”

💿 Sticky Fingers • 🏷 Promotone B.V. / Universal International Music B.V. • 📅 1971

The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers [📷: UMe]“Childhood living is easy to do / The things you wanted, I bought them for you.” Ah – what a sensational opening lyric if I do say so myself! OK… more context is necessary! 🎙 The Rolling Stones have no shortage of hits.  Hits and hits and then, more hits! Among my favorite hits by this legendary blues-rock band is 🎵 “Wild Horses.” “Wild Horses” appears as the third track on one of the collective’s most famous albums, 💿 Sticky Fingers. Worth noting, Sticky Fingers features the incredibly controversial 🎵 “Brown Sugar” as well as a wonderful little tune entitled, 🎵 “Bitch” – lol.  Here, we just focus on this marvelous ballad.

“Wild Horses” is, in my opinion, one of the band’s finest ballads.  🎙 Mick Jagger sings beautifully without losing any rock credibility.  I love his tone on the verse – expressive, earthy, and authentic.  The record, however, isn’t cheery despite its brilliance.  “I watched you suffer a dull, aching pain,” Jagger sings in the second verse, adding, “No sweeping exits or offstage lines / Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind.” Besides being heavy as opposed to light, it should be noted that “Wild Horses” has little to do with equines.  The song appears to reference Jagger’s former flame, 🎙 Marianne Faithfull, though Jagger denies the song is about her. Jagger packs the most punch on the centerpiece, the chorus, which is simple yet ranks among my favorite choruses of all-time:

“Wild horses couldn’t drag me away

Wild, wild horses couldn’t drag me away.”

4. Ty Dolla $ign, “Horses in the Stable”

💿 Free TC • 🏷 Atlantic• 📅 2016

Ty Dolla $ign, Free TC [📷: Atlantic]Objectifying women is nothing new to R&B/hip-hop. 🎙 Ty Dolla $ign does just that on “Horses in the Stable”, which has nothing to do with animals. Guess who these “horses” are that Ty references? Women! Dolla $ign acts like the typical, confident, and cocky artist on this 💿 Free TC highlight, naming various women whom he can bed.  “I told her give me something good I might come back / I snap my finger they be on me just like that,” he sings, before diving into the cringe-worthy chorus, “Horses in the stable, horses in the stable / That I can ride, ooh anytime.” Woo!

Naturally, Ty Dolla $ign can’t resist non-descriptive references.  In the second verse when he references “Nicki,” he describes her, um, goods.  To Ty’s credit on this song chocked-full of empty hookups, at least he admits he’s a dog: “They know the way that I’m living ain’t right / You just another girl and this is just another night.” Of course, he later contradicts himself when he sings, “She said she lookin’ for a real one / I told her that she found a real one,” before the mention of relationships.
