New York rapper Hoodie Allen returns with the scrumptious “Sushi,” the promo single for his third studio album, ‘The Hype.’
He’s back! Who exactly? Hoodie Allen of course! Allen returns with his highly-anticipated third studio album, The Hype (September 29). The Hype is definitely an appropriate title, given the fact there should be plenty of hype surrounding The Hype. Hype itself is one thing, but Hoodie doesn’t play – he brings ‘the heat’ when he drops new music. In advance of album number three, he drops a scrumptious promo single, “Sushi.”
From the start, “Sushi” is exuberant – rousing! The production packs a punch, led by the pummeling drums. Hoodie Allen jumps right in, singing the pre-chorus with incredible hunger and enthusiasm.
“I’ve been working hard to get this paper / If you ain’t been with me from the start then see you later / I just throw my middle fingers up to all the haters / You know we doing well, well, well / OK.”
The verse follows and naturally, Allen gets to work – no questions ask. His flow is impressive, as is his distinct tone. His rhymes are rock solid as well, as he makes countless pop cultural references. These include Dustin Diamond, Nicki Minaj, the New York Giants, the New York Jets, and Twenty One Pilots. Woo! It doesn’t hurt that he does this with incredibly agility. After the return of the pre-chorus, Hoodie treats us to the chorus for the first time. Hint, hint, it’s delicious!
“Oh you think you got it made / Pull in in the Uber, it’s a Escalade / Out in California where they throwing shade / ‘Cause I got that money rolling to me / I got, I got that Sushi, Sushi…”
The chorus drips in swagger, finding Hoodie singing. The best aspect is the harmonized portions. The second verse continues the excellence of the first, referencing Jon Belushi, Dam Majerle, and Ed Hardy among other things. He finishes the song out strong.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the “Sushi” that Hoodie Allen has to offer is gourmet – superb. There’s no glaring flaws to be found. Allen showcases his talent, rapping and singing equally well, as well as exhibiting top-notch creativity. With each release, he continues to get better and better. If the “Sushi” is any indication, then The Hype should be real…-ly good.
