Highly Suspect continue to shine on epic single “Wolf” ahead of the release of sophomore album, The Boy Who Died Wolf.
Highly Suspect are riding high, off of two Grammy nominations and a critically successful debut album, Mister Asylum. Now, it’s onto new thing for the breakout rock collective, who drop highly anticipated sophomore album, The Boy Who Died Wolf, on November 18, 2016. Ahead of the album, Highly Suspect released four singles, including the epic “Wolf.”
“Wolf” opens somewhat mysteriously, giving off something of the element of surprise. Once more, frontman Johnny Stevens delivers clear, commanding vocals. In addition to mad pipes, the production is magnificent. The timbre of the drums stands out. A specific instance of brilliant production occurs on hard-hitting lyric, “It’s not a question / this shit is real.”
A heavy moment occurs when Stevens sings:
“I gave you my heart / gave you my soul / Yeah, but baby, I was born to rock and now I gotta roll / I’m moving on, yeah I gotta let go / yeah, ‘cause baby, I was born to rock and now I gotta roll.”
The falsetto by Stevens on the second verse is superb. Among memorable lyrics is:
“Do you remember we were young? / Imagination filled our lungs / Wolf, don’t make a helpless move / you see me and I see you.”
Sick instrumental work during the final minutes of the song. The angst is real!
Final Thoughts
All said and done, “Wolf” is nothing short of epic. Johnny Stevens once more proves himself to be a badass frontman, showcasing both tender and gritty vocal moments. Furthermore, “Wolf” isn’t a straightforward rock song which eliminates predictability and lets the element of surprise make it a gem. So far, every pre-release from The Boy Who Died Wolf has been superb.
