Rising alternative pop singer/songwriter hemlocke springs show ambition and shines on her latest single, “sever the blight.”
“‘Where are you, my lady?’ / I’ve been in the basement / She tied my ankles up / As a near defacement.” Say what? “You see, I’m not Snow White,” 🎙 hemlocke springs asserts in the verse, adding, “The fairest in our land / I heave a sighing breath / My cavity expands.” Impressive songwriting and plenty of personality make springs and her uniquely titled and themed single, 🎵 “sever the blight”, utterly compelling. The 24-year-old singer/songwriter penned and produced “sever the blight” alongside 🎼 ✍ 🎛 BURNS. The record features beautiful, expressive vocals, with her upper register shining through. Not only does she sing sublimely, but she also has a radiant melody to perform on “sever the blight.” Fittingly, given its title, there is a cool medieval-inspired accompanying music video. Focusing on the song, the crème de la crème melodically is the chorus where she sings, “Love is smiles away / Will I still wait here?” There are some variations lyrically, but the effect is consistent with each iteration of the chorus. Lyrically, “sever the blight” intrigues, embracing a familiar topic: matters of the heart.
Beyond the vocals, theme, and lyrics, “sever the blight” excels from a production and sound standpoint. A marvelous palette of sounds, comprised of keys and synths, shape the record into a sweet, indie-/synthpop joint. There is an element of surprise initially, as the listener feels out where springs is going with “sever the blight.” A thoughtful change of pace, occurring about 54 seconds in, reveals the cards. Here, “sever the blight” adds a lit driving groove and awesome, rhythmic picturesque synths. Although 🎵 “sever the blight” is a strong listen initially, its magic is revealed with each successive listen. If you enjoy alternative pop, you are sure to love hemlocke springs and “sever the blight.”
