Actress-singer Hayley Kiyoko continues to build her case as pop’s next big star on “Let it Be,” one of a number of advance singles from her debut album, ‘Expectations.’
“Let us see, be free.” Her time has come! 26-year old Actress-singer Hayley Kiyoko, who releases her debut album, Expectations in 2018. Among numerous singles released in advance of Expectations is “Let it Be,” and NO we’re not talking about The Beatles classic.
Hayley Kiyoko delivers relatively cool vocals on “Let it Be,” particularly on the verses. Even on ‘the centerpiece,’ the chorus, Kiyoko never gets too excited.
“‘Cause I believe we’re the ones who had it all
I believe we just had to learn to fall
I miss you, I love you, so it’s really hard to see
Yeah, we just got to let it beLet us see, be free.”
Ultimately, she exhibits poise and well-rounded, beautiful vocals sans frills. In regards to the record itself, likewise, it’s radiant and sexy. The vibe is quite appealing, aided by modern pop production that holds back more as opposed to throwing every instrument and synthetic instrument at the listener. With the verses and chorus sounding pretty similar, the bridge provides a bit of contrast. Still, the bridge stays within the character of the song, so it’s not a total ‘change of pace.’
“Can’t imitate us it’s breaking my bones
Heart up in chaos that keeps me alone
Wasted the beautiful all on my own
I’m making a new home
Washing the sheets ‘cause you’re still in my bed
Can’t leave the dark ‘cause you’re all in my head
All in my head and it’s killing me, it’s killing me
‘Cause we’re at the end.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Hayley Kiyoko does a solid job with “Let it Be.” Great vocals, subtle production, and effective songwriting. That said, listening to this record, personally, I’d love to hear a bit more oomph and punch. It’s good, but “Let it Be” doesn’t quite achieve greatness. Nonetheless, Kiyoko has plenty to offer potentially being pop’s next big star.
