“I filled your cup until it overflowed / Took it so far to keep you close… / I was afraid to leave you on your own.” In October 2018, Halsey returned with her first, post-Hopeless Fountain Kingdom single, “Without Me”. Since its release, the single has earned the no. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.  That’s what you call a ‘hit.’ Riding the wave of the biggest hit of her career as a solo artist (she was also part of the no. 1 hit “Closer” with The Chainsmokers), she returns with a remixed version of the single, featuring Juice WRLD.

First things first, let’s revisit some highlights from the original. On this slick, urban-pop record, Halsey focuses on a relationship where she carried the weight all by herself.  After kinging her man, he ended up making her his ex. On the chorus, she wants to know how it feels since she’s no longer in the picture and he’s since fallen off.

“Tell me, how’s it feel sittin’ up there?
Feeling so high, but too far away to hold me
You know I’m the one who put you up there
Name in the sky, does it ever get lonely…”

Juice WRLD enters the picture on the third verse of the record, replacing the bridge from the original. Unsurprisingly, the “Lucid Dreams” rapper manages to reference his gargantuan hit, channeling his heartbroken emotions.

“Along the lines of social suicide, I refuse to die not by your side
So, I’ll take what I can from you, then I’ll hide
And save the lucid dreams for another time…”

In addition to the solo verse, Juice WRLD also appears on the closing chorus with individual moments as well as moments alongside Halsey.

Final Thoughts

Originally, of “Without Me” I commented that it’s clear that Halsey is coming from a different place compared to other records.  That’s still the case on this remix, whether Juice WRLD had appeared or not. “Without Me” remains sleek in production, characterized by its electronic palette of sounds, but there’s more heart and emotion vocally.  She didn’t need Juice, but it’s a compelling remix.
