Halsey, Manic [Photo Credit: Capitol]Halsey returns with “Graveyard,” which encompasses loyalty to a fault and potentially death. “Graveyard” arrives as the 2nd single from her 3rd LP, Manic

Grammy-nominated alternative/pop artist Halsey has only gained in popularity since releasing Badlands in 2015.  Her sophomore album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, was kind of a big deal.  Naturally, her third studio album, Manic (January 17, 2020), is also expected to ‘do big things.’ After releasing the promo single, “Without Me”, the alt-pop artist takes us to the “Graveyard” – well, that’s the name of the second single!

“Graveyard” arrives clocking in at just over three minutes –a respectable duration.  Notably, there are a number of co-writers, including Jon Bellion and Louis Bell.  Both Bellion and Bell also co-produce, alongside Ojivolta and The Monsters & Strangerz.   Given the appearance of Bellion specifically, that alt-pop sensibility is loud and clear from the start.  Vocally, Halsey sounds respectable, particularly on the centerpiece, the chorus, where the graveyard metaphors pick up even more:

“They say I may be making a mistake
I woulda followed all the way, no matter how far
I know when you go down all your darkest roads
I woulda followed all the way to the graveyard
Oh, ‘cause I keep diggin’ myself down deeper
I won’t stop ‘til I get where you are
I keep running when both my feet hurt
I won’t stop ‘til I get where you are
Oh, when you go down all your darkest roads
I woulda followed all the way to the graveyard.”

Honestly, the chorus tells you what you need to know about the song.  Halsey is in deep, and basically, she’s loyal to a fault.  She’ll literally follow this person to death.  At least, it’s an entertaining listen.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Halsey delivers an enjoyable single with “Graveyard.” It’s not game changing on the alt-pop artist’s part, but its relatable and pleasant by all means.  She’s getting in deeper and deeper, essentially digging her own grave.  As a preview to Manic, it should be an interesting LP come January 2020.
