Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Halsey delivers another intriguing song with “Ego,” the fourth advanced single from their fifth LP, The Great Impersonator.
“I’m hoping that someone comes around / Helps me to figure it out.” That is a statement, Halsey. The Grammy-nominated, alternative pop singer/songwriter promotes ego death in “Ego”. In the chorus, they assert, “I think that I should try to kill my ego / ‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me.” Ooh-wee! “Ego” marks the fourth advanced single, and second track from their fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator. Halsey, Greg Kurstin, and Gregory Aldae Hein penned the song. Kurstin, Wyatt Bernard, Michael Uzowuru, and Austin Corona produced.
The lyrics are ear-catching and honest on “Ego.” In the second verse, Halsey states, “Still a little kid that can’t make friends / Wanna be invited, but I won’t attend.” At the end of the verse, they sing, “The voices all came crashing down / And said, ‘You’re too nice to run this town.’” Once again, it leads to the chorus where Halsey is self-critical. In the bridge, they extend upon this unhappiness, concluding by singing, “I’m doing way worse than I’m admitting.” Do you see how they tied ego into that lyric? Clever! Despite their troubling emotions, Halsey sings lovely. I love the grit they bring at times, digging into the egotism. The melodies are rhythmic and tuneful. The chorus is especially memorable, anchored by a pop/rock sound and aesthetic. Ultimately, “Ego” is an honest, intriguing, and well-rounded song from Halsey. It’s not the second coming mind you but well above average. The Great Impersonator should be another compelling project by the artist.
