Fueled by a Zapp sample and reminiscing on his incarceration, Gucci Mane taps Justin Beiber for his new single, “Love Thru the Computer.”
Some collaborations you just don’t expect in the least. That’s the case with Gucci Mane tapping Justin Bieber for his new single, “Love Thru the Computer.” Bieber has collaborated with numerous musicians mind you, but honestly, did we expect this? No. The collaboration ends up working on this lighter rap record.
From the start, it’s clear that “Love Thru the Computer” isn’t your typical Gucci Mane record. Obviously, the title is a play off the song it samples, the famous “Computer Love” by Zapp. This gives “Love Thru the Computer” a more soulful sound – it’s not your typical Gucci banger. Even changing things up, the southern rapper delivers ‘game’ throughout the course of his two verses. He reminisces on his incarceration at the top of the first verse, before diving right into the matter at hand – love/sex. Naturally, Gucci objectifies her, rather them, while dropping sexual innuendo (“Good brain, she don’t even need a tutor”) and referencing drip (“So much ice on my bitch, she need a cooler”).
Of course, the computer comes into play on the third verse where he asserts, “Even then, through the computers I was kissin’ you / Remember through the computer I would visit you / Daydreamin’ ‘bout us fuckin’ in your living room.” We’ll leave that at that. As for Justin Bieber, he shines on the chorus, keeping things clean singing about the “computer love.” He drops a brief second verse, naturally playing up the computer relationship.
Final Thoughts
So, is “Love Thru the Computer” a bit, um, ludicrous? Yes, definitely. That said, the concept isn’t totally far-fetched, even if it’s a theme that’s difficult to construct strong songwriting with. Still, the non-traditional relationship is very much a thing, particularly with how rampant social media is, not to mention object sexuality. There’s some charm about this record, even if it’s by no means perfect.
