American dance musician and producer Gryffin and Swedish singer John Martin join forces for a surefire, dance bop, “Cry.”
Dance musician and producer Gryffin (Dan Griffith) has released a few singles and a number of remixes in 2020. He’s back with a brand-new single, “Cry,” alongside John Martin. Just in case the name doesn’t instantly ‘ring a bell,’ the Swedish singer is a frequent dance music collaborator, most notably with Swedish House Mafia. Griffith and Martin make sweet music with one another on “Cry.”
Starting with Gryffin, the production and sound of “Cry” is a big selling point. I love the use of the guitars on the verses. The acoustic guitars that appear during the chorus are pretty sweet as well. “Cry” picks up in intensity where production is concerned ‘post-chorus,’ where we get a massive drop. During the drop, as to be expected, it’s dynamic, synth-heavy, and unapologetically electronic.
With Griffith’s role as producer locked in – alongside Jason Ross – let’s devote sometime to John Martin Lindström, shall we? Martin serves up commanding vocals from the start, period. He’s incredibly expressive and nuanced in his performance. Clearly, he sounds like a seasoned veteran, even if he’s not known as that ‘headlining artist’ per se. Regardless, he brings the lyrics to life successfully, with superb production fueling his fire. Among the best sections he illustrates masterfully include the catchy chorus, as well as the bridge section. The bridge is noteworthy in its own right, as it provides a clearly discernible contrast to the rest of the record. Also, it truly serves as the percolating bridge to the final, epic chorus, intact with the drop.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Gryffin and John Martin ‘put in work’ on “Cry.” This is a pretty sweet record where everybody excels at their respective role. “Cry” won’t change your life, but it will definitely provide a spark to your playlist – FACTS!
