After nearly four years, Grouplove returns with its first new single, post-Big Mess, “Deleter.” “Deleter” is epic, totally rocking hard.
“All this time I thought you were a leader / It turns out you’re only a deleter…” Alternative collective Grouplove returns in 2020 with a rockin’ single, “Deleter.” “Deleter” is the first brand-new music from Christian Zucconi and company since releasing their third album, Big Mess in 2016. Yeah, we had to wait a ‘hot minute,’ but man, was it worth it.
After commencing with a pounding piano ostinato and an energetic count off, Grouplove gives the listener this massive, aggressive guitar-driven sound on the intro. While there’s more balance during the verses, “Deleter” is pretty much ‘turned up’ from the onset. No worries – Christian Zucconi is never covered up by the dynamic, heavy-handed production. He takes the philosophical approach of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” His vocals can best be described as commanding and infectious; he’s own.
With the badass nature of the production properly note, as well as strong lead vocals from Zucconi, what about the songwriting? Well, again, the results are pretty sweet. The lyrics are colorful, with noteworthy lines such as “Am I anxious or just martyred?” (verse one) and the brilliant, “And how we built a lighthouse / Out of all these godforsaken ruins /… The world will recover once you put us in the past, yeah.” Okay, without context, it’s a bit, um, nebulous. But, what you can take away from this rocking cut is that the perceived leader totally sucks – the DELETER that he is!
Final Thoughts
Just to reiterate, we, the fan boys and fan girls, had to wait nearly FOUR years for new music from Grouplove. While that sucks, much like the leader who is a deleter in “Deleter,” the wait was well worth it. “Deleter” rocks hard, and the band doesn’t miss a beat. Christian Zucconi is potent, assisted marvelously by Hannah Hooper. The biggest selling point is the energy – this totally pumps you up!
