Alternative, indie-pop collective Grouplove returns after a three-year hiatus with its third album, āBig Mess,ā with superb results.Ā
Alternative band Grouplove returns after a three-year hiatus between albums.Ā The last time we heard from Grouplove was in 2013Ā when they were Spreading Rumours.Ā Those Rumours peaked at no. 21 on the Billboard 200, a significant ācome upā from the bandās debut, Never Trust A Happy Song.Ā Is new album Big Mess indeed a ābig mess?ā Not in the least.Ā Grouplove shines on album number three without a doubt.
āWelcome to Your Lifeā kicks off Big Mess sensationally. Well produced, well written, and captivating, the opener possesses more depth than itās given credit for.Ā In a general sense, the band seems to make the statement, make the most of life, even if itās imperfect. Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper ā partners in real life ā share vocal duties.
āDo You Love Someoneā keeps the momentum flowing without a hitch. Enthusiasm remains the M.O. This enthusiasm is best showcased on the infectious chorus:
āSo tell me, do you love someone? Iām losing all the time I had I never had to know about the other Know about the other side.ā
The message is simple and straight to the point. Do you love someone?
āStanding in the Sunā has two tough acts to follow, but holds its own.Ā Definitely clear is that nothing is going to derail the collectiveās shine:
āI just stand in the sun Warm my head in the sun Run around ātil it all stands still I just wait in the sun.ā
Single āEnlighten Meā features exceptional production work ā the hard beat is a selling point. Ā In addition to the beat, Grouplove manages to fuse numerous stylistic cues. Sometimes it sounds like urban pop, while the later arrival of guitars signals full-fledged rock.Ā āEnlighten Meā is about appreciating life in the present, according to the band.
āBut I donāt feel my life is real Iām on the fence with common sense.ā
āThe night is young, the rest is up to you / why yaā gotta say, āGood morningā?ā āGood Morningā stands out for various reasons. Synthesized horns and bright, exuberant production doesnāt hurt. Neither do strong vocals. Hooper sings lead on verse one and verse two, with Zucconi resuming lead on the chorus. Danceable, āGood Morningā is infectious to the nth degree.
āSpinningā may not be as fun, but is as consistent as the majority of Big Mess.Ā More notably, āSpinningā has a fantastic message ā overcoming adversity.Ā This is exemplified on the chorus:
āSay here I stand I was broken now Iām brave Say here I am Found my colors in the grey.ā
āCannonballā is incredibly ambitious and energetic. True to its title, it sounds like itās about to demolish something. On the dynamic āTraumatized,ā Zucconi is honest about his current status in life:
āA girl so beautiful sleeps on the couch Thereās a little baby in her blouse She is my only one true love In the world Cause sheās my fucking girl.ā
āHeart of Mineā keeps the volume knob turned up.Ā Guitar-heavy, Grouplove doesnāt back down.Ā Literally, the emotion seems to be played through guitar amps. Penultimate cut āDonāt Stop Making It Happenā is fun.Ā Among the best moments, the bridge section, chanted by Hooper, who proves sheās got swag. āHollywoodā concludes Big Mess respectably. The vocal harmonization between Zucconi and Hooper is radiant.
Final Thoughts
Thereās nothing messy about Big Mess.Ā Grouplove assemble a terrific album that never misses the mark.Ā Sure, not every record is a highlight in the big scheme of things, but none fall short of consistency.Ā This is an album many will sleep on but shouldnāt.
Gems: āWelcome to Your Life,ā āDo You Love Someone,ā āEnlighten Me,ā āGood Morningā & āDonāt Stop Making It Happen.ā
