GrooveGalore MuziK Release “Is This Love”
Contributed by George James
I
wasn’t sure what to expect when I first heard about GrooveGalore MuziK tackling Whitesnake’s “Is This Love,” but let me tell you, this release ticks all of my boxes. This isn’t your typical cover version that tries to play it safe. Paul “GrooveGalore” Kastick and his collaborators KASTICK and Cen’C Love have created something that feels both nostalgic and completely fresh. The Caribbean rhythms flow naturally with David Coverdale’s original rock anthem. I’ve always loved the 1987 classic yet hearing it reimagined with reggae soul and that unmistakable Jamaican flavor made me appreciate the song in ways I never expected. The production work here is strong too with every drum hit and synth line feeling purposeful and alive too.
KASTICK’s vocal performance makes the song. There’s a raw edge in his delivery which is hard to fault and he connects emotionally. Meanwhile, Cen’C Love’s harmonies add beautiful layers that lift the song as it progresses forward with vigour. You can hear influences from everywhere in this music, from Bob Marley’s reggae foundations to Van Halen’s rock energy, even touches of Prince and Third World Band. Yet somehow it all comes together as something uniquely theirs.
The mixing and mastering by Josh Gold at The Basement Studio in Boston deserves special mention too. The sound is polished but never loses that organic energy that makes you want to turn it up loud. Even the cover artwork by Rissarera Designs captures exactly what this music feels like, vibrant and full of life.
This is the kind of cross-cultural musical fusion that reminds me why I love discovering new takes on familiar songs.
