The ever-distinct Canadian singer/songwriter Grimes returns with a ‘powerful’ new single, assisted by American singer HANA, “We Appreciate Power.”
“What will it take to make you capitulate? / We appreciate power / We appreciate power.” Grimes is one of the more unique musicians in the game – understatement. My first experience with the Canadian artist came via her 2015 LP Art Angels. I found the project to be intriguing, while I also found myself asking at times, WTF am I listening to. Focusing on the present, Grimes returns with a new single, “We Appreciate Power,” featuring her friend, American singer Hana. Notably, the ‘technology-themed single’ doesn’t arrive without controversy – well rather bullying accusations that coincide its release. But, focusing merely on the record, it’s quite alluring.
What makes “We Appreciate Power” totally alluring? The production is a good starting place, blending the robust sounds of rock, industrial rock, and pop seamlessly. The distorted guitars and punchy drums add extra oomph, particularly serving as the backdrop for HANA during the chorus sections. HANA has an edgier, more assertive voice compared to Grimes, who takes a more casual, left-of-center approach on the verses. Even with Grimes opting for a more low-key approach, the backdrop continues to roar behind her, particularly those driving guitars. One of her best moments occurs on the bridge, which she performs the first half, while HANA contrasts on the second half. Lyrically, this section keys in on the technology element:
“And if you long to never die
Baby, plug in, upload your mind
Come on, you’re not even alive
If you’re not back up on a drive.”
Final Thoughts
Controversies or beefs aside, Grimes brings her ‘A’ game on “We Appreciate Power.” It’s not that often a five-and-a-half-minute song can keep you firmly engaged, but “We Appreciate Power” accomplishes that feat. Solid production, vocals, songwriting, and overall vibe makes this a winner. We indeed appreciate power.
