Even with their best days behind them, Grammy-winning rock trio Green Day delivers a brief, enjoyable single with “Here Comes the Shock.”
Fair or not, after a while, once booming, extremely popular acts see their commercial lucrativeness wane. That’s just the way it works. In 2020, 🏆 Grammy-winning rock band 🎙 Green Day released a new album, 💿 Father of All…, that didn’t exactly ignite the charts on fire. Did you also know they released a covers album (💿 No Fun Mondays)? Sure, people who listened and reviewed Father of All.. were mixed, but part of the issue is simply the band has been around for years (no disrespect intended by any means). Regardless, 🎙 Billie Joe Armstrong and company return with a new single, their first of 2021, 🎵 “Here Comes the Shock”.
“Here Comes the Shock” is all about that brevity. Clocking in just past two-and-a-half minutes, Green Day have no intention for keeping the listener for a long time. That’s part of the charm of the single. Another part of the charm? Even though the band may not be as popular as they once were, Billie Joe Armstrong’s still got it – those lungs, that unapologetic attitude/spirit. Vocally, he continues to sound ripe and incredibly compelling with no drop off. Adding to the allure, “Here Comes the Shock” is loud and in your face punk. There’s little let-up, save for a few isolated moments. This is full throttle rock and roll that’s incredibly aggressive, but also delivers a catchy, memorable chorus. After all, “Here Comes the Shock!”
Final Thoughts 💭
All in all, Green Day delivers an enjoyable, fun single with “Here Comes the Shock.” Would I characterize this single as being shocking? Nah. As 🎙 Jane’s Addiction once put it, “Nothing’s Shocking”. That said, there’s lots to like about this short and sweet joint from the dynamic sound, spirited performance by BJA, and of course, the catchy chorus.
