Billie Joe Armstrong and Green Day bring the energy on “Father of All…,” the title track from their 2020 LP. The execution, however, is debatable.
“I got paranoia baby / And it’s so hysterical / Crackin’ up under the pressure / Looking for a miracle.” Interesting Billie Joe Armstrong – very interesting. In 2020, God’s Favorite Band, otherwise known as Green Day, will release their first new album in more than three years, Father of All… Fittingly, the iconic collective releases “Father of All…,” the title track, as the promo single for the LP. The question is, how does the two-and-a-half-minute joint stack up?
Green Day keeps things brief “Father of All…” as aforementioned. The tempo is quite fast, the volume is loud, the energy quite pronounced, and the vocal distortion turned up to the nth degree. In addition to distortion on Armstrong’s vocals, he also serves up falsetto – yeah, you read right. The first-time hearing “Father of All…” was quite off-putting because it sounds starkly quite different from what the band has released in recent times. Also, the vocals… moving on. There is no political theme or message, something Armstrong has made clear from the get-go. Still, “Father of All…” has bite to it, evidenced by lyrics such as “Hurry up ‘cause I’m making a fuss / Fingers up ‘cause there’s no one to trust.”
Final Thoughts
So, how does “Father of All…” stack up? Well, it’s definitely ‘different.’ What I will give the title track credit for is the fact that it’s ‘in-your-face,’ unapologetic punk. What is questionable are, first and foremost, the vocals. Also, based on one song alone, one wonders what the script of Father of All… will ultimately be. I like the attitude and energy, but I question the execution to an extent.
