Good Charlotte, Awful Things © MDDN RecordsMaryland pop-punk vets Good Charlotte serve up an enjoyable, respectable cover of “Awful Things” by deceased emo-rapper Lil Peep.

Rest in peace Lil Peep. In his short career, the emo-, punk-infused singer and rapper commenced a unique musical movement.  One of his more notable songs was “Awful Things,” which was incredibly energetic and accompanied by a fun, unique music video.  Maryland pop-punk band Good Charlotte records a cover of the gem, in all its emo glory.  Ultimately, the results are superb.

The success of this cover should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Good Charlotte.  Also, it should come as no surprise to anyone who followed Lil Peep.  Stylistically, they’re a match, specifically on “Awful Things.” Peep packed a punch as he sang, and Joel Madden matches the intensity. Musically, the sound is slightly brighter, with the hip-hop drum programming replaced with the real deal. Even if the music has more finesse, it is still filled with the angst and passion of the original.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Good Charlotte do Lil Peep justice on “Awful Things.” It ends up being an excellent fit for the band and keeps the spirit of the 21-year old gone way too soon alive.  Kudos G.C.
