“Contemplating, isolating

And it’s stressing me out

Different visions, contradictions

Why won’t you let me out?”

That’s deep stuff Godsmack – deep stuff.  The veteran hard rock band, led by Sully Erna, returns with its seventh studio album, When Legends Rise (arrives April 27). When Legends Rise arrives nearly four years after 1000hp (August 2014). Along with the announcement of a new album comes a promo single, “Bulletproof.”

Short and sweet, “Bulletproof” fails to reach the three-minute mark – talk about brevity.  The song’s premise is relatively simple.  On the aforementioned lyrical excerpt from the first verse, Sully Erna and Godsmack deliver a sentiment of being trapped, going on to say, “I need a way to separate.” That separation from adversity occurs on the chorus, where Erna is resolute to the nth degree.

“Now that you want it

Now that you need it

I’m too far gone

You’re trying to blame me

But I’m not breaking

I’m telling you, I’m bulletproof…”

On the second verse, the discontent of the band continues, much like the first verse, with more separation necessary. Beyond the songwriting and the theme, Godsmack have some other happenings on “Bulletproof.” From a vocal standpoint, the 50-year old frontman (unbelievable) remains in good voice. He doesn’t ‘blow it out the park’ or anything but considering his age and how he’s sung over the years, he’s still got a voice.  Musically, the guitars are filled with angst, darkness, and energy.

Final Thoughts

Does Sully Erna and Godsmack change the world with “Bulletproof?” No.  It’s okay, but not classic.  The band isn’t nearly as relevant as they once were, and that’s no disrespect.  After a while, the former chart-topping acts all lose some of their popularity, as well as innovative spirit. At this point, the band has long been established, and it would take something truly different to wow.  No needle is being moved with this one.
