Gnash, known for the hipster-relationship hit “I hate u, I love u,” returns with a heartbroken single, “the broken hearts club.”
The inner-emo of gnashreveals itself “the broken hearts club.”The singer/songwriter made a name for himself in 2016 with his hipster-relationship anthem, “I hate u, I love u.” Indeed, some hated it, or were annoyed by it, but personally, the record was charming, low-key, and unique. Focusing on the record at hand, “the broken hearts club” reveals most of its cards with its title. Gnash sets things up on the first verse.
Essentially, the singer/songwriter is devastated by the break-up and needs something – anything – to alleviate the pain.
“I need emotion, Novocaine, I need a numbing of my pain
I need somethin’ to take away the remains of your name
I need amnesia for a day and an umbrella for the rain
That hasn’t gone away since you said you didn’t need me.”
The second verse follows a similar script, finding gnash still struggling with moving past her. Prior, as well as after the second verse, there’s a pre-chorus section and chorus section to deal with. On the pre-chorus, he finds “A shady spot that they [a hazy mid-morning daydream] saved me.” On the chorus he goes on expound about the open arms of the broken hearts club.
“‘…We hate every little thing about the people that we love
We’re the let-down, we’re the lied to, where the lost go and it finds you
Where the lonely make the lonely feel less lonely…
Misery loves company, so hey, what do you say?’”
On the bridge, he joins the club.
Final Thoughts
Gnash keeps things honest and simple on “the broken hearts club.” That include the production of the record, which wasn’t mentioned above. The weight is on the words and of course the heartbroken, moody vibes. For the most part, it’s the aching vocals of gnash, accompanied by rhythmic acoustic guitar. All in all, enjoyable and successful.
