GloRilla, “Typa” [📷: CMG / Interscope]Grammy-nominated Memphis rapper GloRilla is aggressive regarding love on “Typa,” a single that prominently samples a beloved 2000s Keyshia Cole song.

“Yeah, I love me a trappin’-ass, dark-skinned, country-ass / Got it out the mud, six-one, ol’ thug ass.” Ladies and gentlemen, GloRilla (Gloria Hallelujah Woods).  She continues in the first verse of the brief single, “Typa”, “Talk real slick, big dick, big gun-ass / Pick a bitch up when we fuck, ol’ strong-ass, nigga.” Damn.  As always, GloRilla is hardnosed as fuck. Pardon my French, rather my f-bomb, but there is no other way to put it! That is the expectation from the Grammy-nominated Memphis rapper.  Interestingly, the song that is sampled makes GloRilla’s unapologetic lyrics shocking.  The chorus is the first section unveiled on “Typa” in which the Keyshia Cole “Love” sample is obvious; it’s pitched down.  Still, serving as the chorus, you can hear those signature cracks by the Grammy-nominated R&B singer: “Love, never knew what I was missin’ / But I knew once we start kissin’, I found…”

Tommy Brown, Courtlin Jabrae, and Leather Jacket produced “Typa.” After the intro/chorus, the hip-hop cues kick in, specifically the knocking beat.  And, of course, GloRilla is aggressive to the nth degree regarding her desires and idea of L-O-V-E. With the first verse ‘rough around the edges,’ Ms. Woods isn’t kinder or gentler in the second.  “Fall in love every time we link (Goddamn), he got me sprung dot com (Oh Lord).” Oh Lord, indeed! She adds, “Nigga, I don’t wanna put you on a leash (Fuck that) / You a dog, I’m a dog, we can keep it in the streets (On gang) /… Yeah, we both outside, that’s my type of nigga (Ooh).” Charming… What does one make of “Typa”? That is a good question. Over two minutes, GloRilla keeps it 💯, NO CAP.  She has recorded better songs, but this one is worth spinning, particularly if you are in the mood for some rough…  We’ll leave it there. We listen and we don’t judge!
