In the 312th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from San Diego metalcore collective, White Harbor.
“W“What makes us stand out is our diverse style and workflow compared to a traditional band.” Very interesting, 🎙 White Harbor! Now, please, expound: “We work remotely, track/produce ourselves, and have a wide music palette when it comes to our creative side.” Cool beans! Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the San Diego metalcore collective including their genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know…: Interview No. 312
For those who may not be familiar with White Harbor, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
🎤 What makes us stand out is our diverse style and workflow compared to a traditional band. We work remotely, track/produce ourselves, and have a wide music palette when it comes to our creative side.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did White Harbor form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?
🎤 White Harbor was formed through a mutual friend named Tyler who’s actually from our label, Blackgate Records. Chris met Tyler when searching for work for his studio, Half Cab Studios, and Nate knew Tyler from being in their previous band, Lion I Am. He brought us both together and we have been writing still to this day ever since!
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 We wanted to write, release, and promote our song within a year. We not only did that but started making content through Tik Tok, made visualizers for fans, and even produced some side project stuff together as well. Our goal right now is to release an EP that is over our fan’s expectations and continue to do more!
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 White Harbor would be considered metalcore or emo in some ways but if you saw our Spotify favorites you’d see some post-hardcore, pop punk, some pop like Joji or Doja Cat and a little of hip hop. Nate’s more into the As I Lay Dying hardcore where I’m into more of the Descendents Punk side of music.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 We haven’t gone on tour as a band but we both have been on tours with other bands. [Chris] My favorite time on tour was Not Half Bad’s Canadian Tour when we were super tired and drunk on Mountain Dew Vodka (yes that is a thing) at a hotel we split with a band. Anyways the guitarist and the other band’s drummer were gone all night, so we just figured they were getting McDonald’s. Anyways we woke up and the other band’s drummer woke up with only a Canadian flag over his body which we still don’t know where he got it from to this day!
[Nate] The coolest thing for me was with Lion I Am. We were driving up to Reno for our next show and we were stopped in our tracks due to a herd of horses being led. It was breathtaking and I’ll never forget it.Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 Chris: 🎵 “Die Alone” is still one of my top songs that really resonate with us but this new song we’re releasing soon is very personal and has a lot of time spent on it production-wise from our songwriter Nate.
🎤 Nate: I think 🎵 “Die Alone” is my favorite from the record we’re dropping. It’s largely influenced by a lot of my favorite artists, and I love how I was able to blend styles together.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
🎤 Chris: I’m a little bit of a camera guy, I recently picked up photography from my job and started taking photos for local bands and businesses here in San Diego
🎤 Nate: I’m a father to a special girl named Rylee. She’s our biggest fan and loves to sing the “Nah Nah’s” from our upcoming song, 🎵 “No Hope.”
Closing out, what is White Harbor currently working on, or promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 This last year we’ve been working day and night to create the best EP for our fans to experience. We are releasing a new single called 🎵 “Forever” that will be released November 11th. We’re excited to share more songs but that will come very soon after.
🎤 Nate: I have about 20 unreleased songs written that we may or may not release in the not-too-far future.
