In the 511th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we welcome back the Swedish hard rock band The Chuck Norris Experiment.
For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes The Chuck Norris Experiment distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
I am Chuck Ransom, the vocalist in the Swedish hard rock band The Chuck Norris Experiment. We play honest stripped-down kick ass rock’n’roll that will make your bones shake, and your feet stomp! As a matter of fact, we were voted “Band most likely to rock your socks off” in high school.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did The Chuck Norris Experiment form, and what were some of your goals or visions early on?
When this adventure started, we had no more plans than to have a good time, rocking out, and drinking beers. And I think we still roll like that, we are very happy with where we are, and our “weekend warrior lifestyle” suits us well these days!
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or perspectives changed since you first started? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
My personal goal is always to try to write a better album than the last one. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose, but the goal is not to give up. We have been doing this for 22 years now, and the band is like a family of best friends, so yeah, we try to keep this rock monster alive for as long as possible.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences, and how are they influential?
I don’t think we ever tried to sound like any other band, but we find ourselves asking the question, “what would Turbonegro do?” or “What would Hellacopters do?” quite often. It is not sound or song-wise, but coolness/cleverness-wise, we ask this question. I get inspiration from good, clean, and simple songwriting.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
We hear all kinds of crazy tour stories from bands like us, but my guess is that most of them never really happened. We had our share of broken-down cars, lost band members, and unexpected pregnancies. And on stage, a lot of weird things happen on stage, but the one thing that comes to mind is when we played a big rock festival in Germany, and a big-ass fly flew straight into my throat, and I threw up on the spot. That was ‘effectful.’
To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
I can only answer for myself, and I love our song “DirtShot,” it just hits me every time we play it, the riff, and then the riff, and then the riff. I love it both on record and live.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about The Chuck Norris Experiment? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
I play bass guitar in the surf rock’n’roll band The Riptide Rats, and I make mean meatballs.
What is The Chuck Norris Experiment currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
We have just released an album called Hot Stuff 3, which is a collection of non-album tracks from the last few years. It is all recorded in the same studio, during the same time period, so it is basically a new studio album. A lot of cool gems there for the rock’n’roll adventurer! We will also record a couple of songs for some new, exciting projects that will be out later this year. AND, we will play Spain, Germany, Sweden, and the UK before the summer hits us!
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
Thank you for having me!! Take care out there! – Chuck Ransom
