In the 416th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from self-described, multidimensional artist, Sev7en Taylor.
“I’m a multidimensional artist. I exist in all realms of creativity.” That is a bold, confident, and powerful statement from Sev7en Taylor. He adds, “I would like people to know […] that universal people exist, and we can do many things without being confused or unfocused.” WORD. Multidimensional is fitting for Taylor who wears many hats. In addition to being a musician, Taylor is a published author, universal connector spiritualist, and podcast host. Later, Sev7en delivers an unforgettable, thought-provoking, philosophical ‘bullet’ regarding his craft: “I always had to pick myself in order to evolve.” Originally, an interview with this captivating and talented black queer artist was proposed in 2023 but failed to materialize. It happens. Better late than never, right? Right. Sev7en superbly answers 12 burning questions, providing background and insight into who he is and the greatness he shares with the world. So, without extending the intro longer, let’s jump into Getting to Know…Sev7en Taylor Q&A: Interview No. 416!
Hey Sev7en Taylor! Thank you so much for taking the time to grace The Musical Hype with an interview. I am excited to have you answer my burning questions. First, for those who are unfamiliar with Sev7en Taylor, how would you introduce yourself to them? What would you like the world to know about you? What makes you distinct or unique artistically and otherwise?
I am Sev7en Taylor. I’m a multidimensional artist. I exist in all realms of creativity – Born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. [My] ancestors’ roots [are] in Tallahassee, Florida. At the ripping age of 29, I have written five-plus books ranging from different topics/genres, etc. I’ve recorded a few mixtapes, countless features, and four major studio projects. I think [what] I would like people to know is that universal people exist, and we can do many things without being confused or unfocused. I feel my creative approach to projects, etc. makes the crowd come around me and become connected to my work/ art/ music etc. I pay homage to my musical influences (Nicki [Minaj], Foxy [Brown], [Lil] Kim, Missy [Elliott], Jay-Z, and Biggie) while still staying original to my own artistry as well.
Sev7en, how did you get your start as a musician? Any juicy or tea-filled backstories within your artistic genesis?
I’ve always enjoyed music, and I feel like it’s the first language most of us musicians learn. I wrote raps in my Spanish class and then I went into poetry then came right back to music after breaking up with my 2014 ex. I always loved how music made me feel and then once I learned how to flow etc. — it was an opening for queer artists in late 2015 going into 2016. From there Sev7en Taylor was born and I became who I am today. The tea is I always had to pick myself in order to evolve.
What were some of your goals or visions early? Have those goals or perspectives changed or evolved since then? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
My focus and goal is to have a global career. It’s already in progression. I’m big on challenging myself and proving to myself first— that I can do it.
We are all influenced by something and somebodies in our lives, no matter what career path we choose. Who and or what influences you as an artist? How does it influence you?
I named them earlier but Nicki, Foxy, Kim, etc. – they all make the gumbo to what I do. I look to them to make iconic bodies of work or challenge myself to create meaningful work.
You released the single, “The Curious Case of the Venus Star” in May 2024. Would you provide some insight on this bop? The conception or inspiration?
This song was created to just get things back going – my grandmother was in at-home hospice. She gave me advice earlier in my career; to never let anything come in between that. I also paid homage to my ex, Vinichi Paul (who passed away earlier this year) [hence the] reason why I say “ Why did you leave me? / Deceive me?” It’s a way to cope with grief and the reality of them no longer being here. The third verse of that song gives me chills. I had to channel back ‘Sev7en.’
You released The Qliphoth in September 2023. What was the recording process like? How long did it take, and who was involved in the process?
Three years to record and properly come all together. That album was very prophecy felt; a lot of people sampled are no longer alive and the relationship I had with my ex; no longer exists. It’s a very bittersweet, beautiful body of work. And it’s making its rounds.
What was the inspiration behind The Qliphoth? What do you as the artist want listeners to take away from this project?
Make sure to live so you can create art. I also want them to know that I’m having this human experience too – on records like “DIRTY SNEAKERS” where I’m very vulnerable about a toxic love and the attachment to it. It’s a very spiritual album and it teaches you a lot; the more and more you listen.
What were some of your favorite songs that appeared on this project? What made these particular songs special to you? Why did you choose to release them into the universe?
It’s 27 tracks so that’s kinda hard but I feel like “ALIEN SOUNDS” / “Complimentsonmywaistline” / “777this” and so many more just my artistic ability. How I am about to create these songs from scratch and bring you timeless music. The whole project is my baby.
We focused solely on The Qliphoth, your most recent project. How does it compare to your previous projects? Was this a moment of artistic growth and evolution?
A whole lot of growth and evolution. I truly became Sev7en fully with this project with hints of my alter egos.
Beyond your musical endeavors as an artist, you are also a published author, universal connector spiritualist, and podcast host. Can you expound on the versatility that is Sev7en Taylor? Shameless plugs are welcome!
