“We focus on songwriting above genre riffs and have a quite eclectic background.” Good stuff, 🎙 Past The Fall! The UK band expounds, “It’s epic groove metal with grungy sleaze when we’re forced to describe it, but it breathes and can be whatever it wants!” We get the inside scoop on Past The Fall’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and current and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Past The Fall: Interview No. 386!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Past The Fall distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

I guess from our perspective is that we focus on songwriting above genre riffs, and have a quite eclectic background, we don’t like to make music as rigid loops that operates in fusing sub-genre ideas together or operating in just scene clicks. It’s epic groove metal with grungy sleaze when we’re forced to describe it, but it breathes and can be whatever it wants!

Past The Fall [📷: Joe Brady Photography]Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Past The Fall form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

I (Will) have known Thomas since I was 11! We’ve been through countless scrapes and misadventures together as friends and fellow musicians, but it wasn’t until around 2015 that we decided to start Past the Fall and take things to another level. Sebastian is our newest addition – we started playing with him the beginning of 2023 and its taken the bands chemistry to another level.

Me and Thomas wanted to start a band that was free of any genre considerations, we’d been involved in the UK thrash scene before with bands like Evile and Savage Messiah, and just wanted to make something that was totally us and how we felt when we picked up instruments – just so happened that it came out heavy!

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

One thing that has always come first has been no compromise on the music, nothing else would be worth it if that changed. All the stuff other than that has changed over time, probably at first we spent a lot of time touring and getting our chops down, but now we prioritize a lot more the marketing side of the band so we can share and build better nights for our fans and keep them in touch more regularly with what we’re doing.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

For me personally, it probably began with bands like Marion and Nirvana, because that’s what really set my soul alight to music when I was 11.  It opened the door to heavier and heavier stuff and, just in general,  the world of not pop music. Perhaps secondly, in regard to Past The Fall, it’s been Thomas and his father, musically. Thomas has impacted me, and his dad encouraged my switch to bass and their family gave me a safe haven to ruin my life with rock n roll haha!

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

All sorts really it can be pretty surreal sometimes! We’ve lost a drummer all night and only found his shoes (eventually he turned up passed out in a cleaning closet), seen a support act mistakenly OD on edibles before their show, had a show stopped by armed police abroad, bundled out of post-show fights by ambulance (same gig haha), stayed in roach infested motels, had the van disappear in the middle of a European tour on the load out, slept 3 hours a night for weeks on end on grueling self-drive tours, and all the usual typical shenanigans you can imagine that happens on tour!

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

That’s a tricky question! I guess because we come from the school of songwriting of spending a lot of time getting each song right rather than writing a lot and picking the best – each one has its own flavor so there hard to compare, but in terms of what probably delivers the best statement of the band to date, it’d probably be 🎵 “Beholden.”

Past The Fall [📷: Joe Brady Photography]Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Well, we’re all pretty different characters I’d say! Thomas is fluent in 2 languages and a producer, I like to climb and train jujitsu, and Seb is trilingual and a kickboxer!

Closing out, what is Past The Fall currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

No secrets! We’d love the world to know haha! We’re just about to release some exclusive content and music videos for our final single from our debut album 💿 From Insanity’s Ruin it’s called “Poison Mirror.” just Google us and you’ll find a way to connect whatever your poison, haha. We’re also working on 3 brand new tracks which will be out in 2024!

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
