For Interview #95, we gain some insight from the ‘modern metalcore’ band Myosotis, who hail from Hamburg, Germany.
“We really don’t want them all to only watch the show or hear a song by the way, we want them to feel every single word, drum hit, every single guitar riff, bassline or bass drop, that’s how we write songs and how we perform.” Rock on 🤘! That’s definitely an awesome philosophy from German metalcore band Myosotis, the subjects of the 95th interview in our Getting to Know… series!
The band, which hails from Hamburg, is comprised of six members: Julian Seiler (drums), Thomas Grigo (bass), Timo Hazerli (vocals), Max Maeder (guitar), Kilian Harrsen (vocals), and Calvin Roesicke (guitar). With a just a little bit of background to whet the palate, let’s jump right into the meat of Getting to Know… Myosotis: Interview #95!
Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with Myosotis, what would you say makes your band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
Hey, hey – first of all thanks for having us! Our aim is to create a zone for the people. They shall be able to forget about all the daily things and just live the moment. We really don’t want them all to only watch the show or hear a song by the way, we want them to feel every single word, drum hit, every single guitar riff, bass line or bass drop, that’s how we write songs and how we perform. Hopefully this is something you could call unique because nowadays it’s often a question of “what really works to get popular,” but to be honest, there is nothing in this world what doesn’t already exist, ha-ha.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Myosotis form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?
Well, there’re only two of us who really come from Hamburg. The others primarily come from central or east Germany. Nearly all of us didn’t know anyone in Hamburg. We finally came together because Kilian, one of our vocalists placed an ad. After a little bit of exchange and preparing the first rehearsal we instantly were dating each other. For some reason it literally was like magic…like love at first sight!
Our goals at this point, getting a label deal and playing as much shows or supporting as much bands as possible. Well, we reached at least one of that goals 😉.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
Definitely! In the meantime, every single one of us gained a lot of experience and we kind of work like our own company. Everyone has his own tasks in addition to songwriting, but at some point, you do need professional, big business help in the right place. That’s where Blood Blast comes in.
Two months ago we signed our first digital distribution deal with Blood Blast, a sub-company of Nuclear Blast and Believe. THIS was the next step we had to take and we’re so happy about that!
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
Joey Jordison of Slipknot in the older days influenced me a lot. For me, his drumming was out of nowhere and after seeing him the first time, I instantly wanted to play drums, too. Not only celebrities but also my father and brothers influenced me a lot. There was always music at home and somebody was singing or playing piano or guitar. Sometimes really annoying but in the end really helpful!
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
Oh yeah, there’re a few stories we could tell. Well, let’s start with the first show at our first, bigger tour. Town: Cologne. Venue: Blue Shell. Size of the stage: really small to small. The whole gig went perfect, no one was getting hurt, everyone had fun but then…after the last played note our bass player Thomas were turning around and smashed his bass against our guitarists head. At this point Calvin were touring with a little scar under his eyes! Good news for Calvin: For now, there’s no scar in his face anymore. Bad news: Thomas is still is on stage next to him, haha!
Wow! Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
It’s maybe not the strongest one but for me, personally, “Distorted mind” is still one of the songs I like most. It has got everything…really personal lyrics, a good mixture of an “in your face-sound,” people know the chorus line and shout it out as loud as they can, a sick breakdown in the end to release one last energy, boom!
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
I think everyone has his/her secret talents even if they are sometimes still hiding. I don’t know if this is a talent, but I can speak for myself, that I’m also a sport scientist/therapist. So, if a band member got physical pain I can try to fix that shit…if I want to…
Musician/sports scientist/therapist huh? That’s pretty cool! Closing things out, what is Myosotis currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
It’s been a quite long time for us and our audience as well for big news, so, we’re definitely open to share some of our next steps with you! First of all, we’re about to release three new songs/videos within the next half of the year. “What if…” will be the first one and will conquer the world on July 17! 😉 Also, in December, we will hit the studio again but more about that next time!
Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
Thank you!
