Getting to Know... Misplaced [Photo Credits: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Misplaced]For the 55th interview in the Getting to Know… series, The Musical Hype gets the scoop on Glasgow pop-punk band, Misplaced from guitarist Kenneth Hilling.

“We’re trying to take the work ethic and productivity that we see in other genres like hip-hop and apply it to the pop-punk scene.” That’s definitely a totally ‘woke’ answer made by UK pop-punk band Misplaced, who are the interviewees on the 55th interview published on The Musical Hype. The question posed regarded the distinctiveness of the collective, while the answer definitely deserves mad respect. Misplaced is comprised of Kyle Beaton (vocals), Kenneth Hilling (guitar), Nicholas Woods (guitar), and Richard Smith (bass).  It’s Hilling who answers our juicy questions to get acquainted with this hard-working band.  Without further ado, here is Getting to Know… Misplaced: Interview #55.

Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype (Faulkner): Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with Misplaced, what would you say makes your band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Misplaced: We try to be more active than other bands. It’s so frustrating when you are in love with a band’s sound but have to wait years between releases or tours. We’re trying to take the work ethic and productivity that we see in other genres like hip-hop and apply it to the pop-punk scene.

Faulkner: Terrific answer – I couldn’t agree more! Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Misplaced form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?

Misplaced: We formed late in 2018; Kyle, Richard and I (Kenneth) had a few attempts at projects before this but we made some mistakes and didn’t really want that on Misplaced record, so we started again and brought Nic and Geran into the fold. We all felt we were ready to take on a more serious project so we put a lot of focus into promotion and never actually announced the band until we had singles recorded.  I think we’re quite proud of how things went because it was a step up in terms of professionalism for us and we’re excited to take that even further.

Misplaced [Photo Credit: Misplaced]Faulkner: Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

Misplaced: I think when we started, we would have been happy just making music people like but since we’ve got a bit of a following it does make you wonder how far you could take it.

Faulkner: Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Misplaced: I think our sonic influences are pretty clear, but we have some artists that inspire us more through their attitude than anything. Kendrick Lamar is a big one personally; the projects he puts out are so vivid and concise, its like one salient idea getting pulled in all sorts of different directions rather than just an assortment of bangers. He makes proper albums. Artists like him that can see the bigger picture are really rare and not appreciated enough.

Faulkner: Cool insight by all means.  Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Misplaced: We had a guy attempt to throw himself off a bridge in front of us in Aberdeen [Scotland] which was a really scary moment. Luckily we were able to help him out and it just ended up a crazy anecdote.

Faulkner: Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Misplaced: When we released “I’ve Been Up Way Too Late” the reception was really overwhelming, particularly online. The amount of feedback we got was really amazing. Live we always look forward to “Struggle”. The chorus is so catchy and easy to sing along with so it tends to be a fan’s favorite.

Misplaced [Photo Credit: Misplaced]Faulkner: Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Misplaced: We have zero secret talents. All the talents we have are currently on display.

Faulkner: Closing this thing out, what Misplaced currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Misplaced: We just released our single “Storyboard for a Pessimist”. This one is a little different it’s really stripped back, just an acoustic guitar and Kyle’s voice so it’s a different sound and we’re really excited to see how its received. We’re heading down south in March to record our next project so that’s the most immediate big news we have. If you’re looking for live dates check out our Facebook page.

Faulkner: Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
