Getting to Know…Maverick: Interview No. 364 [📷: Brent Faulkner / The Musical Hype; Maverick; Tumisu via Pixabay]In the 364th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from Montreal ‘punk rawk band,’ Maverick.

“Come see us play! Yes, our music totally kicks ass. Come get the real stuff live!” WOO! Now that’s an introduction, right there, 🎙 Maverick! When ask what makes them unique, Eddie, who answers our burning questions, responds, “It has been hard describing our sound… Not dirty enough for street punk, too raw for pop.” He expounds regarding the Montreal collective, “I guess, somewhere in the middle of many punk styles, as we listen to everything, and get inspired by many… Putting a label on it would only restrain us in our creative process.” Good points made! Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Maverick: Interview No. 364!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Maverick distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Well, we never pretended in the first place such a thing. Although, it has been hard describing our sound… Not dirty enough for street punk, too raw for pop. So we are, I guess, somewhere in the middle of many punk styles, as we listen to everything, and get inspired by many. And we’re fine with that. Putting a label on it would only restrain us in our creative process.

As for our secret behind removing (with quite a bit of skill) our audience’s socks… we deliver. We are passionate and love what we do. We make it a point to deliver and have the most fun possible. With us, what you hear is what you get.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Maverick form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

The visions always been the same, since early on: Playing some rock n’ roll with a burning heart and a smile on our faces. I (🎙️ Eddie) have officially started bringing people in the project in 2017. However, in late 2019, I had to continue the journey on my own, as I had to face the fact that we weren’t all on the same page. Then I met 🎙️Fil and 🎙️Elliott, this year (2023) at the jam space we share. We hit it off from the start and Maverick was up and running again, ready for live appearances.

Maverick [📷: Maverick]Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

They’re the same haha, we’re staying the course. For sure, we’re often called to adapt through different events and times, but the goal is the same. The aim remains.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Landing on specific figures is not an easy task, as there are plenty whom we look up to. However, for the sake of argument, the names are Bob Marley (Eddie), Billy Joe Armstrong (Fil) and Freddie Mercury (Elliot). Their work goes beyond music, and that is very inspiring to us. Their charisma, on stage and off, was/is larger than life. Their voice, their fight, their stories, don’t cease to amaze us.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Hmm, how I wish we had something to give you right now… Let’s just say we’re working on that. Stories deemed un-presented enough to share with you. For sure, we’re always having fun when we’re together and goofing around. So, something’s pretty much bound to happen 🙂

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

🎵 “Long Tall Sally. We play a sick punk cover of this one. The demo has already been recorded, and we hope to put it out sooner than later. It’s one of my personal favorites, from one of my personal favorites of all time: The unmatched, unmatchable, Little Richard.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Come see us play! Yes, our music totally kicks ass. Come get the real stuff live!

Maverick [📷: Maverick]Closing out, what is Maverick currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Hahaha, not much secrets with us haha. Although… we are in the talking of making a collab + split EP with a local band. However, now being the high season for live performances, it’s been a bit hard to find time to get together and concretize the project. Right now, we’re also focused on the upcoming shows. We’re planning to head back in the studio to record an EP of our own, hopefully, before the end of the year.

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.

It’s our absolute pleasure Brent! Thank you for your time and dedication to the music scene. Best of luck to you as well my friend!

With mucho love, yours truly.
