For Interview #48 in the Getting to Know… series, The Musical Hype gets the goods on multifaceted, multidimensional Italian collective, Lucifour M.
“We do… a sort of stream of consciousness sort of pop music… with a lot of different influences, and no rules.” Stream of consciousness pop music? Different influences? No rules? Hell yeah – sounds like a surefire, winning formula Lucifour M! For the 48th interview in The Musical Hype’s Getting to Know… series (48 already, where has the time gone?), we get the scoop from the self-described multifaceted and multidimensional Italian music collective.
Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype (Faulkner): Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Lucifour M distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
Lucifour M: We are …or we do…a sort of stream of consciousness sort of pop music…with a lot of different influences, and no rules…there is a bit of R&B and soul or funk probably in our music…so maybe people that like Frank Ocean will like us more than people that use to listen to Stone Temple Pilots! But it is not a rule…for example – I like them both! 🙂 If we are unique, we can’t really tell…others could maybe…and we would like it 😉
Faulkner: Frank Ocean and Stone Temple Pilots can definitely co-exist! Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did your Lucifour M form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?
Lucifour M: We came from a lot of different experiences and projects such as M+A or Amycanbe and still doing a lot of different things…we never stop y’know 🙂 Marco [Frattini] and Michele [Ducci] first met and just some time later, decided to start something together…then I (Mattia “Matta” Dallara) came along and we became this strange evil monster :D. Everything we do that we love is a goal for us, we do just what we feel…y’know
Faulkner: Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
Lucifour M: We never changed that: we want to have fun and always wanting more of course…but we are very happy of what we did, and we do as well
Faulkner: Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
Lucifour M: Hmm, actually, we do listen to really everything and not all influences are just musical. We often talk about movies, or soundtracks in movies, photography… the visual aspect is an important thing for us like listening to new stuff on the radio…or find out old vinyl :-). Yeah, we really listen to everything from Marvin Gaye to [David] Bowie to metal…or great Italian music like Pino Daniele – Michele is a real fan of his music, and he should be better known even outside of Italy. His music is brilliant; we miss him.
Faulkner: Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
Lucifour M: Well, funny question! We’ve done just a few concerts so far! 😀 But I remember when we played Berlin, we took off from Italy thinking… finally some fresh air! … We found out the hottest club in Berlin on the hottest day in Berlin in the last 100 years! …It has been crazy… almost everybody naked and sweating…and drinking… great fun! 🙂
Faulkner: Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
Lucifour M: “Fox,” our next single out in a week or so, is maybe the best song we did so far, to me at least…that song really represents what we are doing.
Faulkner: Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
Lucifour M: Well, our ‘fourth element’ (we simply call him Mr. L….because he is there but he is not….and often changing…) – y’know there’s a sliding door in our music and in our line-up.
Faulkner: Closing this thing out, what is you/your band currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
Lucifour M: As said, there is a new single called “Fox” on the way, and a new album in the works… A video, and a short film by a great director with few of our songs as the soundtrack, plus gigs and gigs… including some festivals like The Great Escape Festival in Brighton in May…we can’t wait! You can pre-order the new single, “Fox,” here.
