In response to our first burning question, she adds, “Each time I’m on stage it’s different so, the audience can’t really predict me so much.” We get the inside scoop on the Halifax, Nova Scotia metal vocalist’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into Getting to Know… Irian Darkwood: Interview No. 417!
For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
I like to interact with people in the crowd, I’ll look at and sing to them, or hold my mic out to have people sing the lyrics to the song I’m singing. I love audience participation, and I feed off the energy they bring. So, to say, each time I’m on stage it’s different so, the audience can’t really predict me so much.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. Irian, how did you get your start, and what were some of your goals or visions early?
I actually started out on the karaoke stage, I discovered there I just love watching people sing and smile and dance, and just ‘remember when.’ My goal in the beginning, and still is, is to continue to invoke those things with people, [and] bring a little joy, fun, and happiness in a far too serious world.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
No I don’t think anything really has changed, my goal is to reach as many people as possible with my music and bring smiles and relaxation to the ‘too-serious’ reality.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
LZZY Hale is one major influence, she seems like such an awesome person and such a powerful vocalist, she inspires me to just be myself and give everything I have!
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
I once was singing, came off the stage for a break, sat down, and a guy came up, nearly sat in my lap and told me I had pretty hair and could he touch it lol. I said was flattered, but no thanks.
To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
My favorite song so far is our take on “Greensleeves”. It’s fast-paced and really funny, I’m sure people can relate to the lyrics in this world of technology and cyber creeps ha.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about …? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
Well, not many people know that I advocate heavily for PTSD awareness. And education. As for interesting talents? I paint, I love pouring the paint and creating abstract art… Strange thing about me? I love peanut butter and onion sandwiches ha.
What are you currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
We are looking forward to the upcoming release of Greensleeves: a modern take on technology and cyber creeps, haha. You can find more information in the upcoming weeks on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, the website, and Linktree.
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
