In the 485th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from I Am Untitled.
For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes … distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
I lost 80% of my tongue to stage 4 cancer and nearly died. I was told I would never sing or speak again. I now live with a permanent speech impediment and lisp, but I refuse to quit making music and singing. My artist name is I Am Untitled, but my name is Jason David.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did … form, and what were some of your goals or visions early?
I Am Untitled formed right after I survived stage 4 cancer. I sang a song for the first time, even though the doctors said I’d never sing again, and it went viral on Facebook. 6 million views in 2 weeks. Then it got picked up by FOX, NBC, 700 Club, etc., and broadcast all over the world. Soooo many fans wanted the song recorded, so I recorded it, but felt weird releasing it under my name. I wanted the song to belong to the fans, to be their anthem. Plus, as someone living with a disability, I am not a big fan of labels. So, it made sense to release the song under the name, I Am Untitled.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
After cancer and then COVID completely disrupted my plans, I’ve learned the art of pivoting and not holding onto ambitions that are no longer helpful.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences, and how are they influential?
I grew up heavily influenced by U2 and Justin Timberlake. Bono influenced my songwriting, and Justin influenced the genre combination styles.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
At 1 am, someone slammed on our RV door, “Let me in, I’ve been stabbed!” I looked through the window and said, “I can call 911 for you,” and this dude took off running, screaming, “DON’T CALL 911!!!”
To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
“Checklist.” This is a song based on my fight with suicide, during a very low point in my battle with cancer. To still be alive today, and now able to sing a song about not giving up and see hundreds in the audience crying and finding hope through it means EVERYTHING to me. We then created a remix of it called ‘Don’t Give Up’ which is also on the new BLANK CANVAS Deluxe Edition album.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
I’m also a stand-up comedian, lol. So, when I get asked to speak as a motivational speaker, I combine my music with stand-up comedy and visual effects to hopefully create an unforgettable storytelling experience.
What are you currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
We are dropping new singles and music videos every two weeks until our new album, NO TURNING BACK, premieres in the new year with an all-new tour: The NO TURNING BACK Tour.
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
