“Greymarch is essentially my solo project.” Thanks for the info 🎙 Cody Hess aka 🎙 Greymarch! In response to our first burning question, Hess  expounds, asserting, “It’s all my favorite aspects of metalcore distilled into its purest form, coming from a nerdy, goofy guitar dad who a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls video games.” What more can you say 🤓? Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on Greymarch: the genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Greymarch: Interview No. 339!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Hey, Cody Hess here! Greymarch is essentially my solo project. It’s all my favorite aspects of metalcore distilled into its purest form, coming from a nerdy, goofy guitar dad who is a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls video games.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Greymarch form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

Greymarch started as a solo project due to the pandemic. Previously, I was in bands that toured across the country with acts like All That Remains, Ice Nine Kills, and Atreyu. But when that came to an end, I had the opportunity to be home with my family and start work on a brand of metalcore that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

At first, I was just wanting to make the music that I’d had in my head for a long time, but it didn’t really have a place in my previous project. The more I put into it, the more I realized that I needed to get it heard by as many people as possible. Now, I’m working to push it as far as possible and establish a wide-ranging listener base.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Greymarch is heavily influenced by the modern metalcore sound of bands like Wage War, Fit For A King, and I Prevail. The blend of melodic, catchy choruses with hard-hitting riffs and explosive breakdowns is prevalent throughout the catalog.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

As for crazy tour stories, I have a few. But one in particular stands out. I was on tour, playing a show in Dallas, and after our set we would always be out and about in the crowd, interacting with fans and hustling CDs to help put gas in the tank. On this particular night, I was stopped by a beautiful and very inebriated girl by the venue entrance. She looked at me and said, “Can I have you?” I looked her up and down and said, “Yes.” She blushed and held up a poster she’d gotten from our merch table, and said “I mean, can I have your autograph?” I smiled, signed her poster, and that was that.

A couple months later the band was on tour again, with another stop in Dallas. She found me on Instagram and messaged me before the show, “I won’t ask again if I can have you unless you want me to.” And I replied, “Do it.” We found each other at the show, started talking, and haven’t gone a single day without talking ever since. We’ve been married for two and a half years now!

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

One song that sticks out is a cover we did of No Doubt, 🎵 “Just A Girl”. Very tongue-in-cheek, seeing as not a single one of us was actually a girl. But we infused some heaviness and screaming into the cover, and it was a blast to play and was very well received.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

As I said, huge fan of the Elder Scrolls video games. Most people are familiar with Skyrim, but my favorite is actually Oblivion (the one before it). I took the name Greymarch from a storyline in the game that I really enjoyed.

Beyond that, I’m a professional woodworker and currently a furniture builder. Most of my musical ideas pop in my head when I’m in the shop building something.

GreymarchClosing out, what is Greymarch currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Greymarch is gearing up for the release of 🎵 “Bite the Bullet” on March 10th, with a lyric video, music video, and much more in store. It will close out the string of singles I’ve been releasing as the project’s debut EP! Very excited to share it with the world, the song is an absolute banger.

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.

Much appreciated, thank you for your time!
