In the 494th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from the Fribourg, Switzerland-based band Glaascats.
For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Glaascats distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
The music is sung through a male and female voice that intertwine and create deep spaces. Other than that, we have many songs with strange tunings spitting out sounds that can trigger an attentive listener.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Glaascats form, and what were some of your goals or visions early?
The band was formed in 2020 as a trio when Alexander met Jonathan at a jam session and invited him to join siblings Amelia and Alexander. Our goal was to simply make music and share it with anyone willing to listen. Our vision was to make the band grow as much as possible as independent artists.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
Not much. The concept stays the same. Of course, we’ve gone through change, but our ambitions remain pretty much the same. Now, going on an EU tour seems almost realistic. We learned a lot about the music industry (and still have a lot to learn) and have grown to understand the importance of all elements surrounding the band, meaning it’s not always all about the music. We are still driven to take the band further along the long road. Yet we remain focused on producing quality and original music that comes from the heart.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences, and how are they influential?
For me (Alexander), Sixto Rodriguez is a huge influence. Guitar-wise and mostly lyrically. I’m so amazed by this artist. It’s hard for me to speak for Jonathan and Amelia.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
Amelia once activated the distortion pedal for the bass during a show, but the pedal had way too much volume, which scared the audience.
To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
“Wanna Dive” is a song we wrote in 2021, and we have played it at every show. We love playing it, and the crowd does too. I think the song has a certain sensitivity and good rhythm.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about Glaascats? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
The three of us are country kids from Switzerland.
What is Glaascats currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
We’re already writing songs for the new album.
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
