On our 225th interview in our Getting to Know… series, we chat it up with compelling ‘dark’ and ‘heavy’ solo project, GHASTLY MURDER.
W
hen it comes to 🎙 GHASTLY MURDER, there’s ample ambition. According to 🎙 Gary Emmins / Mr. E, with this solo endeavor, “[I wanted] to bring to life an idea that I have had swimming around in my head for a while of creating a ‘loose’ concept album based within a near future post-apocalyptic time.” Woo! Emmins goes on to expand his ambitions: “I plan to develop the idea into a stage show that encapsulates that bleak environment with both sound and vision.” And that is merely his responses to our first burning question on our 225th interview! There’s more where that came from! Rather than spoil it, we’ll let Mr. E do all the talking on 🎤 Getting to Know… GHASTLY MURDER: Interview No. 225!Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes GHASTLY MURDER distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
🎤 GHASTLY MURDER is a solo project delivered by 🎙 Gary Emmins/Mr.E from the band The 🎙 Filthy Spectacula. The music of GHASTLY MURDER is a darker and heavier affair.
The idea behind GHASTLY MURDER is to bring to life an idea that I have had swimming around in my head for a while of creating a ‘loose’ concept album based within a near future post-apocalyptic time. The songs that I write for this hold those themes and tell the stories of this world within them. I plan to develop the idea into a stage show that encapsulates that bleak environment with both sound and vision.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How was GHASTLY MURDER born and what were some of the goals or the visions you had early on?
🎤 The GHASTLY MURDER project came about originally due to free studio time that no one in my band could do so rather than waste that gift I decided to make all the music myself (🎵 “The Hearse song”) and I found that I liked the process. During the lockdown when playing live shows was not an option, I decided to revisit the idea in a more focused approach, and this has developed into the current EP (of 6 songs) 💿 The Rise and Demise of Gory Emminence, which I would in an ideal world like to expand into an albums worth of songs and then feed that into a live show. I did want to start this off as a ‘band’ project, but I found difficulty in finding the right sort of players so rather than let the idea stagnate I decided to go ahead with the project as a solo artist.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 I think the feedback and response to what GHASTLY MURDER have produced to date has been really incredible and hugely encouraging. It has made me more determined than ever to push forward the idea and write more material for it for future recordings and live shows and to develop the ideas and make them bigger than I originally envisioned – so world domination!
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 My music tastes are eclectic. I already lead a kind of double life by writing songs for two very different bands so the influences for both aspects are different. For GHASTLY MURDER I would have to say I wanted a band that possessed the power and theatre of say Rammstein with elements of The Doors, Depeche Mode, and all things dark and beautiful in between – as long as the songs have melody, hooks and power then I am happy.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 I was once in a band that broke up mid set in front of an audience – it had been brewing for months – and it all came to a head one night. I can’t see that happening To GHASTLY MURDER unless (currently) I fall out with myself – which has been known to happen.
I once fell through the floor after an over enthusiastic jump and went straight through – but it was a stage I was going through.
Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 GHASTLY MURDERS Discography at the moment is only a handful of songs (but grows daily). Of what is recorded to date I would say songs like 🎵 “Twitch”, 🎵 “Chloroform”, 🎵 “Talking To The Dead”, 🎵 “You’re Ghosts” & 🎵 “The Hearse song” seem to be fan favorite’s and are always great to perform. A few songs yet to be recorded have huge potential to be special songs and I can’t wait to make that happen– the future awaits!
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
🎤 I have lived many lives (& have been regressed) and I also once saw a ghost in my house but felt no fear just a curiosity.
Closing things out, what are you currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 GHASTLY MURDER’s current E.P. 💿 The Rise and Demise of Gory Emminence is being released one track at a time via band camp then on all other platforms. The First track to escape is 🎵 “Twitch”. The video for TWITCH can be seen here
