Getting to Know... Fox Violet [Photo Credits: Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Fox Violet]Celebrating the 50th interview on the Musical Hype, we get the scoop from Los Angeles melodic rock collective, Fox Violet.

“I just wanted to chase honesty and transparency ruthlessly. I wanted to be able to stand here as a woman and be dark, real and not shy away from the hard truths of life just because I’m a female musician.” Now that is quite a powerful statement if I do say so myself! That incredible statement – the answer to one of our interview questions regarding goals – comes from Fox Violet (Thea Juliette).

Juliette, the vocalist and songwriter of the Los Angeles melodic rock collective, provides ample insight on the 50th interview on The Musical Hype (can you believe we’ve hit 50?).  Her philosophical views about making music (“I have a compulsion to write music that stems from a part of myself that I don’t want to judge”), are quite intriguing.  Honestly, the whole interview is quite intriguing.  With that said, you should totally, you know, read it – check it out! Without further ado, here is Getting to Know… Fox Violet – Interview #50!

Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype (Faulkner): Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes your sound unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Fox Violet: It’s all about the energy. I really just care about diving into some subconscious to bring out a melody. I want each song to feel more and more like some kind of rhythm I heard when I was asleep, I care most about the frequencies resonating on a cellular level.

Fox Violet [Photo Credit: Fox Violet]Faulkner: Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. What were some of your goals or musical visions you had from early on?

Fox Violet: I just wanted to chase honesty and transparency ruthlessly. I wanted to be able to stand here as a woman and be dark, real and not shy away from the hard truths of life just because I’m a female musician.

Faulkner: That’s quite powerful! Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

Fox Violet: At the core they are still the same, I have a compulsion to write music that stems from a part of myself that I don’t want to judge. It’s something you have buried deep down and can’t explain. The more you focus on the core it tends to just grow by itself into its own thing. I don’t want to pollute it with anything other than that, honestly. I want to just keep bringing it back to the music and only the music.

It’s super easy to get distracted by noise: of people telling you what you should sound like, look like, even be. You just have to let all of that go and care only about something really real.

Fox Violet [Photo Credit: Fox Violet]Faulkner: Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Fox Violet: You definitely hear things that you can’t get enough of, that you just love immediately. I’m no different and I do think they do impact me, clearly. Maybe it’s not 100% clear how they actually impact me, but when I then go to pick up a guitar, it’s educated me in some capacity that you likely can’t completely explain. In that regard I can’t get enough of Radiohead, and they will forever be just something I can’t explain.

I want to say though that my biggest influence is love though and its different varieties, in family, in life, and how it means to understand it, loose it, live through it and return to just being yourself.

Faulkner: Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Fox Violet: I would say I’m clumsy as shit and if no one notices that then thank goodness….

Faulkner: That’s a colorful, honest answer for sure! Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Fox Violet: My favorite song is “Trenches”; I just feel it really did something to me in the journey of its creation and almost like the title I felt like I was in some kind of mellow battle zone (which is exactly what the song is about). Live, I love “Freak”, and a new song that’s being recorded, “Dying World.” Both of these for different reasons, they are both though social commentaries, and on the opposite scale of different types of intensity.

Faulkner: Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Fox Violet: I went to art school for photography, I have a master’s degree in ancient archeology and I slept in the Amazon rainforest once… something like that?!

Faulkner: Closing this thing out, what are you currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Fox Violet: I’m focused hard on recording both an EP and a record this year, and plan on doing some debut shows in NYC, Austin and wherever else I can get my hands on.

Faulkner: Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
