In the 292nd Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from Roman alternative metal/alternative rock band, Falling Giant.
“Glitter in the dark. Brightened blood.” Umm… help me out here, 🎙 Falling Giant! In response to our first burning question, the Roman alternative metal/ alternative rock band provides some context: “Our uniqueness lies in seeking the erotic essence of darkness in the songs we compose and in the way we present ourselves to the public.” Wow! Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the band that puts “cinema, fashion, poets, and explorers” in their lyrics, sound, and image. That means, we talk genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. Frontman and actor 🎙 Gaetano Marsico answers our burning questions – dramatically, I might add! So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Falling Giant: Interview No. 292!
For those who may not be familiar with Falling Giant, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
🎤 Glitter in the dark. Brightened blood. Our uniqueness lies in seeking the erotic essence of darkness in the songs we compose and in the way we present ourselves to the public. Born and raised in the land of the Dolce Vita and cinema, fashion, poets, and explorers, we put all this cultural baggage into our lyrics, our sound, and our image. Sensuality, darkness, and elegance. This is our mantra.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Falling Giant form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?
🎤 The band was born because destiny wanted it. It was born through a flying and crumpled advertisement inside a music school and since then this sort of magic has been created that unites all the members of a group that despite the economic difficulties of being an independent band, has been able to create its own entity with the few means that we had at our disposal. We have made mistakes many times and we continue to do so, but we have never lost heart. We have the passion to become the next rock stars and we believe in it blindly.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 From the start, the goal was very clear. We certainly worked step by step to build our identity. In the beginning, you had to understand what the game was. Then the place where we can play and create and from there our identity took shape, day after day. We have always had the need to be able to live on music tomorrow. Of our music. And that is why we have never given up and continue not to. We trust each other and support each other in making choices.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 Each of us comes from a very different listening background. For 🎙 Luke Sebastianelli (lead guitar) the model has always been Synyster Gates, for me (🎙 Gaetano Marsico, frontman of the band) Jared Leto, Ville Valo, Billie Joe Armstrong and of course Freddie. For 🎙 Phil Valentini (rhythm guitar) the whole Alt Metal trail, with bands like Breaking Benjamin, while for 🎙 Tucci (bass) and 🎙 Sauron Spalletti (drums) it comes from plays related respectively to prog metal and death.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 We had been asked to play in a club in Rome for a Metal festival linked to this phantom radio that had contacted us. When we got there it was anything but a metal festival. We found ourselves in a suburban club where in the audience there were only horny motorcyclists, old pissed off, and tired from life.
But the funniest thing is that when we started playing, out of nowhere, a super trash grotesque parade started under the stage. We were the music of that absurd fashion show and no one had told us.
The bikers were in high spirits for that parade, and we were there to play for their lucid and erotic dreams happening at that moment. What’s even more mysterious is that there were two other bands besides us, and in the end, it turned out to be a kind of contest as well. We won that nonsense contest, and they gave us two bottles of cheap wine, that we still keep in our studio, as a gift. It was perhaps the most absurd and fun live [performance] of our career so far.
Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 Without a doubt our flagship song is 🎵 “Hades”. It was the single that launched us and made us known in the global market. We surpassed one million views with “Hades,” and it became a small hit in digital underground metal. With “Hades” we understood our style and it is from Hades that we understood that the dream can be realized. We owe everything to Hades.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
🎤 We are all very good actors. For real. I do it for a living, the other members of the group showed their talent during the video clips. I should take them to movie sets. Every fine shot of a video clip we assign an Oscar to the best interpretation.
Closing out, what is Falling Giant currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 We are working on our next album in the studio. It is indeed a very ambitious project. It will be a concept album on overcoming mourning, through images linked to a picturesque and gothic world of which I cannot spoil anything yet.
In the meantime, with our managers Damian and Roberto, we are also working on the next live dates. There are great things at stake that we have in our hands, and we can’t wait to share them with everyone!
