“We put having fun above all.” Right on, 🎙 Dynoride! The band expounds, “If we aren’t having fun there is no way our audience can be having fun. We’re a fun high energy rock trio.” Like previous Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know…Dynoride: Interview No. 328!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

🎤 In DYNORIDE we put having fun above all. If we aren’t having fun there is no way our audience can be having fun. We’re a fun high energy rock trio. Our wild antics on and off the stage are not only fun for us but entertaining for audience members. We wear costumes for nearly every concert and often have a theme for the show to make it extra special.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Dynoride form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

🎤 Dynoride began as an acoustic project in 2008 with two high school friends, 🎙 John Taylor and 🎙 Burnell Eckardt.  Since then, we’ve had 12 drummers. Our current drummer, 🎙 Alex Triece, has lasted the longest but is on thin ice. Between the three current members we have fathered a total of 10 children, and we have now officially solidified ourselves in the realm of “dad rock.”

Early on, Burnell and John just wanted to make some fun, quirky songs together, but when they started to record demos the idea to add drums came up and that changed everything. Our friend Kyle came in and helped record some demos and we played a few shows. Eventually we put together the material for our debut album, 💿 What You Wanted, and from that point forward the band really solidified its sound and stage shows. In those early days, pre-children, we were pretty ambitious with the number of shows we played and the distances we were willing to travel. In our advancing age we are now limiting the number of shows we are playing but putting much more effort into making each show as special as possible.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

🎤 We are definitely putting more thought into planning and doing our best to make every show as special as possible. Our goal now is to make music as much of our lives as possible.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

🎤 We have a lot of influences, but our sound is probably most greatly influenced by late 80s/early 90s rock. It was around this time we were beginning to learn our instruments and, naturally, we were playing songs that appealed to us. If I had to distill it down to just one thing that caught our attention it was the energy in those songs. As creatures of habit, those sounds, and that energy have leaked into everything we’ve played.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

🎤 Geez… there are so many great and funny memories over the years. Two stand out: In 2021 we were asked to play Christmas songs for nursing home residents. We did the show acoustically and as we were getting ready to start packing up after the last song the activity director asked us if we could play Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Never in a million years would we have imagined playing this song for nursing home residents. While we were still in shock, the activity director came back with pom poms for the residents, just like the music video for the song. We rocked it!

The second story… we were the last band to play a gig in the restaurant below the Redstone Room and we had a hard curfew time. The bands that played for us went long. When it came time for us to play we had probably 15 minutes to get everything pulled together and play. So, we did. We played the first song wearing our signature painter suits. It was the middle of winter so the suits, which are normally extremely warm, felt nice; however, this particular time, we had a nice surprise. Underneath these suits we were wearing swimming trunks and we had brought beach towels and beach balls. Between songs we revealed the swimming attire and launch balls into the crowd. We ended up playing 3 or 4 songs with as much excitement and energy as we could before the curfew came, but it was one of the most memorable nights.

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

🎤 We definitely have songs we just love to play. We play them almost every show. A couple that come to mind are 🎵 “Mostly Dead”, about the movie The Princess Bride, and 🎵 “Pardon My Blood”, about the movie, The Burbs. Both of these songs make us feel great when we’re playing them.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

🎤 Band name origin story: A component on the dashboard of Burnell’s Buick LeSabre had the word “Dynaride” printed on it. We liked the word so much that we replaced the “a” with an “o”.

Closing out, what is Dynoride currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

🎤 We are deep in planning mode, working out what we want to accomplish over the next couple of years. The last couple of years have been some of our best as a band and have encouraged us to put some more time and effort into what has been a fun hobby for us up until now. Our hope is to develop a bigger Christmas production that we can bring to theaters and larger venues, write some new material, and design some new merch.

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
