On our 211th Q&A on The Musical Hype, we get the inside scoop from the eclectic, ‘sonic cocktail’ band, Davis & The Love.
“W
e like to think of our music as a sonic cocktail.” A ‘sonic cocktail,’ huh? I like it, 🎙️ Davis & The Love. The band – well, singer 🎙️ Nate Davis – continues, “If you drink enough of our music in, your socks are definitely coming off.” Woo! Prior to both intriguing statements, the band touts their ability to “blend a lot of different styles together,” such as “rock, soul, pop, hip-hop, and even elements of blues.” Awesome! As always on a Getting to Know… interview, we’re treated to awesome insight from the band, including their background, visions, influences, current endeavors, and future endeavors. So, without further ado, here is Getting to Know… Davis & The Love: Interview No. 211!Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would
you say makes your band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks
off?
🎤 I’d say we’re unique because we are able to blend a lot of different styles together. From rock, soul, pop, hip hop and even elements of blues we like to think of our music as a sonic cocktail. And, if you drink enough of our music in, your socks are definitely coming off. Along with some other things maybe lol.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did your band form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?
🎤 It started when I was looking for a particular sound. I really wanted to merge old school soul with new school beats and put my own flavor on it. My buddy, 🎙️ Jordan Hawley in Indianapolis, sent me some tracks that he was working on, and it really locked in with where I wanted to go with the music. From there, I just had this concept of Davis & The Love, because it started out as just me (🎙️ Nate Davis) and the love of music and sort of the energy that I wanted to put out into the world. I was hoping that I would find musicians who had the same goals, and we put an ad out on Craigslist (which could’ve been a real disaster, but ended up working out), and found 🎙️ Nelson who is our keyboard player. I already knew that I wanted 🎙️ Dre on drums, and a booking agent friend of mine suggested 🎙️ Cory on guitar and it really started to click. I also had collaborations with guys that I really respected musically, who all added some flavor to the project. Jay Jones, Benito DiBartoli, Ken Martin, Troi Buchanon, Ryan Russell, Luis Madrid, Al Leach, and Nick Gerlach all added something to the sound. It was a real collaborative effort and continues to be.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 The goal has always been and will always be to reach the most people possible with the music and perform it for them wherever they are around the globe.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 Well, as a writer and front man, I’ve always really gravitated towards lyricists and big personalities. From Jim Morrison to Anthony Kiedis, 2Pac to Outkast, Phil Collins, and Johnny Cash, I loved their energy and passion on stage and in their writing. I also love Motown and soul music going back to Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, etc. I think you can hear that in the energy of our songs.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 Well, I’ve had a lot of crazy stuff happen on stage and on the road. From a homeless guy getting on stage and grabbing the mic from me while we were doing a show in a park, to tripping over a speaker and falling into the drum set, to having certain extremities being grabbed by female fans while performing, to having a woman take her top off at a pub we were playing and sitting there like that for the rest of the set, to being removed from the United Kingdom and sent back to Amsterdam, to playing a show at the Playboy Mansion. There have been a whole lot of crazy things, many of which I don’t remember lol.
Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 Well, our new single, 🎵 “Change the World” means a lot to me. I think we’ve really become more fractured and divided recently, and it seems overwhelming. There’s so much to fix and it’s hard to know where to start. So, for me I just wanted to focus on the micro by being a better person individually to people, and if we all did that it would lead to a change in the macro. More compassion, understanding and love would go along way these days.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
🎤 I do a great Christopher Walken impression. I do a fake sports announcer character named Finch Tundgren that has some stuff on YouTube. I shoot in the low 90’s when I play golf…and I can dunk a basketball on a 9-foot rim. Not sure if any of those are talents, but they may be surprising tidbits.
Closing things out, what is your band currently working on, promoting that you
can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 We’ve got a ton of new music coming out in 2021 and 2022, starting with our new single, 🎵 “Change the World”, and 🎵 “Hot Damn”. We also have an album called, 💿 Future Retro Love Story that’s a great introduction to our sound. Really excited to keep this train rolling and take it as far as we can go.
