In our 241st interview on The Musical Hype, we get incredible insight and background from the Scottish collective, Bubbatrees.
“I
’d say we give off an air of nostalgia while staying contemporary, and I really don’t think there are any bands comparable to us around right now.” That’s both confident and distinct 🎙 Bubbatrees! 🎙 Andy answers all our burning questions regarding the Scottish collective. As to be expected, we get incredible insight, background, and even a colorful response involving a shitting dog (We shit you not)! So, without further ado, The Musical Hype humbly presents, 🎤 Getting to Know… Bubbatrees: Interview No. 241!Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with Bubbatrees, what would you say makes your band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
🎤 I think we provide an enticing alternative to the norm. We have always produced anthemic and ‘sing along’ choruses but we have managed to maintain a definite edge in the musicality. I’d say we give off an air of nostalgia while staying contemporary, and I really don’t think there are any bands comparable to us around right now.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Bubbatrees form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?
🎤 I met 🎙 Kyle in school, and we played in a couple of bands in our teenage years. I also met 🎙 Martin at college, and we spent years gigging together under different names. Eventually, Bubbatrees formed in late 2016 as a 3 piece, we were still finding our feet for a couple of years and the addition of 🎙 Cameron in 2018 really helped us find our sound and opened up our maturity in songwriting. I’ve always just enjoyed playing music to people and writing songs, which I think is a shared vision and enjoyment with all of us. The goal is to make something from that enjoyment.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 I think I was very naïve at a young age. I expected things to just happen for us and didn’t realise that a clear direction of where you want to go needs to be adopted. My perspective on the music industry as a whole has matured and I have a more realistic view of things now, but my goals remain the same. I think we have something great to offer with our music and I continue to believe that we can achieve what we want to.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 Nirvana would be one of my earliest influences, they were the first band that truly excited me, making me want to absorb myself into music and everything that comes with it. I heard 💿 Nevermind at a very young age and it sparked my interest in teaching myself guitar and different instruments. As time has moved on, currently I would say The 1975 are a big influence on the way I write songs, especially for the pop elements. I also love Lil Peep for his brutally honest and refreshing take on lyricism, and, also, Third eye blind. Everyone in the band has very different influences musically, these are just some of mine.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 A dog 🐶 shitting 💩 right in front of me during a song at an outdoor event outside a care home.
Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 My current favourite is our upcoming single 🎵 “Living inside of me”. It is a very introspective and personal song which is something I enjoy being able to express. Musically it is probably the most creative I have gone with a Bubbatrees song and lyrically it means a lot to me. Also, our music video for it perfectly fits the vibe of the song I would say.
Closing things out, what is Bubbatrees currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 Our single, 🎵 “Living inside of me” came out on the 18th of February. A music video will also be released very soon!
Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
