For Interview #56 in the Getting to Know… series, The Musical Hype gets some insight from the UK three-piece band, Broken-Lines.
“We make a huge amount of noise for a three-piece band. We write original, relevant songs that reflect the world around us.” That’s a succinct answer, regarding distinctness/uniqueness from the Pembrokeshire psychedelic punk band, Broken-Lines, who’s featured on Interview #56 on The Musical Hype. The three-piece, “upbeat rock” collective is comprised of David Wellan, Jack Jackson, and Mark Briscoe. All three members provide some insight into the band throughout this intriguing interview, which is quite cool. Without revealing anymore answers, how about you read Getting to Know… Broken-Lines: Interview #56 for yourself!
Brent Faulkner: Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with Broken-Lines, what makes the band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
Broken-Lines: We make a huge amount of noise for a 3-piece band. We write original, relevant songs that reflect the world around us.
Faulkner: Succinct by all means. Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Broken-Lines form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?
Broken-Lines: In 2017, Jack [Jackson] joined Dave [Wellan] in the embryonic stages. We started looking for a bass player and after a couple of initial possibilities we were contacted by Mark Briscoe at the end of 2017. His experience, ability and musical knowledge have enhanced Broken Lines and together we are reaching new and exciting levels of creativity and sound. Our goal is to create music as a full-time occupation.
Faulkner: Sounds good. Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
Broken-Lines: Our main goal never changes. We are born musicians and, as such, feel we need to create and share music in order to maximize our potential.
Faulkner: Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
Mark: The Stranglers, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, New Model Army, Bob Marley, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Steve Harley. These bands formed my style as I was growing up. They showed me that the bass should be on an equal footing with the rest of the band and not some sad twat stood at the back looking bored, like Bill Wyman etc.
Dave: Jimi Hendrix, Nick Cave, Rage Against the Machine, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Bowie. We are all interested in art of all forms. For me, human beings are creative, expressive and sensitive creatures and all these things combine together in the creative process. I just want to try and channel the feelings I have about life, observations I’ve had or just letting stuff out and expressing it through our music.
Jack: New York Dolls and The Pink Fairies. No other influences that I’m aware of?!?!?!?!?
Faulkner: Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
Mark: I was once playing at Dingwalls and fell off the stage backwards into a load of gear! To say I was a little drunk is an understatement. Nowadays I am a lot more temperate!
Faulkner: Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
Broken-Lines: My favourite song is a new single that we’re currently working on. It is a culmination of all three of us from scratch. Look out for it soon, it’s a killer track!
Faulkner: Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
Broken-Lines: We built our own studio where our gear can be permanently setup for recording. It took 2 years and a lot of hard work and money. It is in the middle of the countryside so we can make noise 24/7. It allows us to write in a creative atmosphere and not have to watch the clock when recording. We don’t even have a clock!
Faulkner: Closing this thing out, what is you/your band currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
Broken-Lines: We are currently working on a new single for release at the end of March and are currently doing lots of gigs to promote our new album!
Faulkner: Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
