In the 454th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from post-punk band, Blindness & Light.
“We’re a collective of like-minded musicians with a core love of post-punk.” Blindness & Light expounds, “We do what we feel most and determine our own direction. This comes across vividly in our songs.” We get the inside scoop on the post-punk band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and current and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into Getting to Know… Blindness & Light: Interview No. 454!
For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Blindness & Light distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
We’re a collective of like-minded musicians with a core love of post-punk. We are genuinely independent with no record company control over our output. We do what we feel most and determine our own direction. This comes across vividly in our songs.
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Blindness & Light form, and what were some of your goals or visions early?
Not so juicy really…. redundancy left us with time to kill on a remote island off the north coast of Wales. The music came together quickly and developed a life of its own. We aimed to just release a single and here we are 12 singles and two albums later.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
I think we’ve learned a lot about the way the music industry crushes emerging artists but we’ve found a way to step aside from this with our own brand of stubborn self-determination.
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
The Velvet Underground has to be our biggest influence but also Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen. We have a big love of Factory Records and by chance, our PR is now handled from the old office of Factory Records in West Didsbury, Manchester.
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
We managed to play a whole one-set without false starts or chaotic disorder. A real first for us.
To this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
Probably the first track on the album, Butterfly. It’s about my mother’s lifetime of mental illness and her eventual death. It’s good to get it out of my system.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left-of-center we should know about Blindness & Light? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
We’re quite a diverse bunch, to be honest. Massive age range though spread mainly across the UK but also Argentina and Japan. Hard to get everyone together!
What is Blindness & Light currently working on or promoting that you can share? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
While we’re still going to be busy promoting our second album, I Dreamt I Had Insomnia, we are busy recording album number three which will be out in 2026.
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
