“We bring the BOOM to the party!” Right on, 🎙 Blast Bomb! Johnny, who answers our burning questions regarding the band, expounds: “Mixing punk, rock and Scandi punk is a high energy affair!” Johnny proceeds to provide the inside scoop on Blast Bomb’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and current and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Blast Bomb: Interview No. 387!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Blast Bomb distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Johnny: Well, we bring the BOOM to the party! Mixing punk, rock and Scandi punk is a high energy affair! Its full speed from start to finish which is actually quite impressive for guys of our age!!!!

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Blast Bomb form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

Johnny: Blast Bomb is a band that is 20 + years in the making. Torben, Tobi, Klaus, and our old bassist had been friends since school, years of talking shit about joining a band together [and] they finally did it! But they needed a front man and that’s where I come in! New to Germany and looking for some rock ‘n’ roll. In the beginning, the band wanted to be a stoner rock band, but once we started writing it became very clear that was not going to happen!

Over the last six years we have been working on our sound, trying to not be the standard punk Rrock band and to offer a few other elements of our influences. In the beginning, it was a little confusing but now, I would say we have the right recipe. Since our new bassist, Robin, joined, the jigsaw came together and with our new project called 💿 Explosive Sounds, you can really hear the results.

Blast BombLet’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

Johnny: I think our goals have always stayed the same, to play music we like first and foremost and to be able to look back with no regrets. Will we be headlining major festivals in 5 years? Most likely not! But, can we play some kickass shows, show people that it’s not only the bigger bands that are worth watching at a festivals or warming you up perfectly for your favorite band? Fuck yes! And this is what fuels us, we know our place, and if you watch us, love or hate the music you will be entertained.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Johnny: Our influences are vast, across many genres and we take elements from these without making it to obvious! I mean, personally speaking, my biggest musical influences are The Beatles, and you definitely would not guess that when you hear me open my mouth!

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Johnny: Oh, some stories need to stay within the band! But I have most definitely seen to many of them naked for my own taste! We do a lot of shows for a global organization called the Turbojugend. Their whole thing is just getting drunk and having a good time with everyone. We have been on stage and suddenly greeted by a handful of hairy arses in the front row mooning us, or doing shows a peppermint schnapps off hairy bellies! It’s not glamorous work but someone has to do it!

Blast BombUp until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Johnny: Our new project, 💿 Explosive Sounds, are the best songs we have ever written. A perfect mix of earworms and killer riffs but without question my favorite song is our current single, 🎵 “21:47.” its written about 3 hours after the birth of my son. I was tired and emotional, and I just jotted down my thoughts and to be honest, the lyrics recorded were the same with very limited edits.

What’s cool about this is while we were recording, my son came to visit me. I thought I would show him the vocal booth and let him hear his voice through headphones and not to my knowledge Timo, our producer, had hit record! So fast forward to hearing the first mix and there is my boy… laughing at the end of the song! It was quite emotional. Then, to top it off, the song was sent to Abbey Road Studios in London to get mastered, so it not only has my voice, but my son’s voice has been ran through the desk and speakers of the most famous studio in the world! Now that’s something I won’t forget in a hurry.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Johnny: Well, other than being a tea drinking Brit in a beer drinking German band I would say we’re pretty boring in this sense. To most people that know us outside music, they find the fact we play music quite surprising!

Closing out, what is Blast Bomb currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Johnny: So, we are a bit of the way through promotion for our current project, 💿 Explosive Sounds, which has  five singles released over the coming months. Our first two singles, 🎵 “Hammer Blow” and 🎵 “21:47” have been very, very well received.

To support the first two singles, we are playing a double headliner show on the 9th of December at Molotow [Music Club] in Hamburg. It’s a super famous venue with most big bands making their Hamburg Debut in this club. For us, it’s our biggest headliner to date. But as this interview has been so fun to write I will most definitely drop a secret. Our next single is called 🎵 “Payback.” It’s an anti-Brexit song and will be released on the anniversary of the UK leaving the EU (1st of Feb 2024).

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
