On our 174th interview, Betty Harper gives us the scoop on her background, budding music career, and her musical aspirations.
“Some of the music I write can be deep, but some are also sweet and about someone you love.” Awesome, 🎙 Betty Harper – absolutely awesome. She continues, insightfully, “But what makes them unique is that they are all meaningful not just to the public, but to myself.” As a musician, it’s very important that the music that you write and perform is meaningful to you. Here, the young musician provides us with some fine answers to our burning questions giving us some background, discussing goals and musical aspirations, and of course, mentioning her musical influences. Why should I tell you about what Harper said when she can say it better herself? Let’s let her do the talking on 🎤 Getting to Know…Betty Harper: Interview No. 174!
Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?
🎤 My music is all written by myself and written based on experience and feelings. Some of the music I write can be deep, but some are also sweet and about someone you love, but what makes them unique is that they are all meaningful not just to the public, but to myself. It sort of puts the audience in a ‘in my feels’ sort of vibe!
Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did your solo career start and what were some of the goals or the visions you early on?
🎤 As a solo artist, I luckily didn’t have too many arguments with myself so that’s a positive, I think ha-ha! I always knew I wanted to be a singer from a young age and as I grew up, I barely had an ounce of confidence in myself. I had always dreamed of being on a stage in front of people, singing songs I had written myself. After leaving high school, I decided to just find myself before starting a career I desperately wanted to become a reality. After starting college, we found a producer who I am now signed with and that’s when my dream started to become reality.
Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?
🎤 This is such a good question! I made small goals leading up to the ultimate goal, and little by little the small goals are being achieved. Signing with a producer was a goal reached and then recording my music in a studio was another. I think I’m making new goals as the days go on and it’s really motivating when they’ve been reached! My main goal, which is the end goal, is to tour in and around America. I’m such a long way away from that right now, but hopefully one day! A girl can dream…right?
Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?
🎤 Okay so, when I was younger (I’ll get slated for saying this) Justin Bieber was my influence. He was super cool, had millions of fans and did fantastic tours! As I was growing up, my influencers changed to Adele and Ed Sheeran. They both write amazing songs that have true meaning behind them and that inspired me to write the stuff I do now. Plus, they both put on incredible performances!
Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.
🎤 Ah well, I’ve not mastered the art of an extraordinary performance yet or had enough followers to be able to fill a venue, but I do have this one story that I can think of. I did a gig at a pub where I worked at the time, I had a full set ready and was pretty prepared. As you can imagine performing at a pub, there’s going to be a few ‘slightly’ tipsy people there… so I’m halfway through my set right, and a drunk man comes over to me whilst I’m singing and tells me to play a song (which I forgot the name of). So, I play this song and before I get the first lyric out, He starts shouting the song from the top of his lungs with his arm around me rocking me side to side! I think it’s safe to say he enjoyed his night…
Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?
🎤 Well, not having much experience performing, I think I’d say my favorite song that’s been recorded has to be without a doubt, 🎵 “Blood is Thicker Than Alcohol”. It’s such a special song for me and I hold it close to my heart Because it was written for someone very close to me who was going through an abusive relationship with someone with substance abuse. I wrote it to make it known that this person isn’t alone, that there are people who have been and are in their situation as well and that they have people by their side.
Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?
🎤 I have an obsession with sneakers? Does that count? Haha it’s a good question but not so easy to answer! I mean, it’s no secret that I can’t dance, seriously, getting me up on the dance floor is a tough challenge when I’m sober but when I’m drunk? I will do the dad dance all night long…. Side stepping like a boss until sunrise.
Closing things out, what are you currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.
🎤 Well, we have 3 more original songs being released this year so keep a close eye on the Betty Harper page for those, I am also working on some more music for when these 3 releases are released! Other than that, we are all good and up to speed!
Thank you for having me on here, it’s been so much fun! I really had to delve into my thoughts for these questions!
Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
