nnuendo? More like full-on sexual vibes! Welcome to After Dark 🕛 🌃, a column featuring songs that are best suited for nighttime, specifically, the bedroom.  Like Controversial Tunes 😈🎶, the records featured here raise eyebrows.  The difference between the songs of CONTROVERSY and DARK? These songs specifically focus on the universal topic of S-E-X. The dark records gracing After Dark are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 38th edition of After Dark (2021), we explore the naughty, risqué, scandalous & utterly sexual vibes behind, 🎵 “I Want Your Sex” by 🎙 George Michael

Theme & Lyrics

Long before 🎙 George Michael informed us “It’s a tits and ass world you gotta be prepared” (🎵 “Freeek! 04”), he desired her sex. 🎵 “I Want Your Sex” appears on his iconic, 🏆 Grammy-winning, 1987 album, 💿 Faith, which has no shortage of gems.  It should come as no surprise why “I Want Your Sex” graces After Dark 🕛 🌃 – it’s sexually charged.  Worth noting, while it’s no secret that Michael was openly gay, at the time “I Want Your Sex” arrived, that wasn’t the case.  He wouldn’t come out until 1998, after an infamous, lewd bathroom incident. That incident, as well as his sexuality, have nothing to do with “I Want Your Sex,” by the way.

The 80s was a sexual time in music – the likes of 🎙 Madonna and 🎙 Prince were pushing the envelope.  So, “I Want Your Sex” fits in with the sexual liberation of the times.  That said, it was still the days of Reagan here stateside, there was also the infamous AIDS epidemic, so a song that seemed to encourage sex was naturally controversial.

“I want your sex
I want your love
I want your sex
I want your... sex.”

Bitmoji ImageThe thing is, Michael wasn’t being ‘criminal’ by promoting sex, in essence – it’s prevalent these days! “Sex is natural, sex is good / Not everybody does it / But everybody should.” Right on! Many of us enjoy pleasure, right? George was horny (“I’ve waited so long baby / Out in the cold / I can’t take much more girl / I’m losing control”), hence, he needed some relief, shoo! That said, the times were much more socially conservative compared to now, and fear ran rampant.

Music Video 🎶📼

Bitmoji ImagePicture it: hunky George Michael (shirtless at one point, I should note) 😍, gorgeous women showing skin 😍, and some suggestive, sensual cues.  Now that’s a music video 🎶📼!!! A song about sex required a sexy music video 🎶📼 and “I Want Your Sex” delivers.  Sure, ‘sex’ in music videos and what’s acceptable has come a long way since the late 80s, but you can see why it was risqué for the time.  Still, credit Michael for promoting monogamy at the end of the video! Plot twist?

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageControversial it may be, 🎵 “I Want Your Sex” is a classic.  It could’ve graced any number of columns on The Musical Hype because it fits the parameters of so many.  George Michael was promoting sex at a time where it was risky to do so.  That takes balls… poor choice of words, perhaps.  Anyways, to this day, “I Want Your Sex” is one song that defines his illustrative career.  Too bad he only lived to be 53.
