George Ezra is back! In 2015, the deep, robust-voiced singer-songwriter shined on his debut album, Wanted on Voyage. That effort included gems including ‘ace-in-the-hole’ “Budapest,” “Cassy O’,” and “Listen to the Man.” Ahead of his highly-anticipated sophomore album, Staying at Tamara’s (March 23, 2018), Ezra dropped singles “Don’t Matter Now”, “Paradise”, and “Pretty Shining People.”

“Pretty Shining People” is chocked-full of selling points. First and foremost, are those signature, husky pipes. George Ezra, once again, shows off his distinct, powerful, and robust instrument in all its glory. Beyond the voice, the songwriting is excellent – incredibly fun.  Yet another pro is the production, which shines brightest on the powerful, enthusiastic chorus.  During this particular section, there is heavy use of acoustic guitars, and pummeling drums.  Overall, it’s quite loud dynamically. Also, worth noting is the melody, which is simply beautiful.

An excellent narrative approach is employed on “Pretty Shining People.” On the first verse, Ezra is struggling with fear and change.  On the second verse, he focuses on “what ifs.” The pre-chorus comes from the perspective of his friend Sam:

“He said: ‘Why, why, what a terrible time to be alive / If you’re prone to over thinking and / Why why, what a terrible time to be alive / If you’re prone to second guessing.”

The aforementioned chorus is equally appealing, keeping things relatively simple and fun: “Hey pretty smiling people, we’re alright together…” On the bridge, Ezra sings, “Don’t we all need love?”

Final Thoughts

Consistent, consistent, consistent.  George Ezra is incredibly consistent and incredibly talented.  “Pretty Shining People” is just another example of his artistry and musicianship.  It’s well-produced, well-written, and well-performed.
