Gallant, Doesn't Matter [Photo Credit: Mind of a Genius / Warner Bros.]Following “Gentleman,” Grammy-nominated urban contemporary artist Gallant returns with his second single of 2018, “Doesn’t Matter.”

“You jump, I ump, that’s all we want.” Oh, the plight of R&B, sigh.  It is sad that urban contemporary music has a select few artists making a splash in the mainstream – there are many compelling, capable artists. Among those who deserve wider recognition is Grammy-nominated artist Gallant, who released his debut album, Ology, in 2016.  The 26-year old standout with the mad falsetto returned in April 2018 with the sensually-driven slow jam, “Gentleman”. Now he’s back with his second single of 2018, “Doesn’t Matter.”

Gallant speeds up the tempo on ‘Doesn’t Matter,” at least in comparison to “Gentlemen.” Even so, “Doesn’t Matter” remains sexy, focused on matters of love.  On this slickly produced number, the love seems to be reckless, with Gallant making numerous references to how dangerous it seems to be. On the first verse, he sings, “Knuckles in my back till your nails turn blue,” later moving on to “Tugging on the ends of my invisible noose / Thought you’d be jumping ship, but I was dead wrong…” On the pre-chorus, he proclaims, “Uh, if this love’s an accident waiting to happen / Let’s go out with a bang….”

The crowning achievement of “Doesn’t Matter” is the falsetto-laden, simplistic, but catchy and memorable chorus. That’s where the initial lyrical excerpt hails from.

“Doesn’t matter to us, doesn’t matter to us…

Doesn’t matter, you run, I run

You jump, I jump, that’s all we want.”

The second verse parallels the first, focusing on the dangerousness of the love.  On the bridge, Gallant emphasizes the risk, asserting he’s “dying for you love, call it killing time.”

Final Thoughts

Gallant shines on “Doesn’t Matter,” arguably even more so than “Gentleman.” He delivers compelling vocals, particularly the falsetto.  The backdrop as well as the theme of the song is fuel for his artistic fire.
