“Ihad a hundred chances to move on, I always / I always blow that, yeah.” Matters of the heart fuel 🎙G-Eazy on his latest single, 🎵 “Hate the Way.” 2020 has been quite an interesting year for the rapper, who, shifted away from rap on Everything’s Strange Here. The album found him dipping his toes into alternative territory and, well, it flopped harder than a pancake.  Sure, there was never any doubt he’d rap again, but given the results of Everything’s Stranger Here, it’s best he’s back to spitting sooner than later.

“Hate the Way,” produced by Mike Crook and Ryan OG, initially sounds as if the alternative tour of duty might not be over for Eazy.  It commences with guitars, but no worries, featured guest blackbear, who sings on the chorus, ensures this is a hip-hop joint.  Those guitars are backed by drums that come directly from the hip-hop playbook. G-Eazy returns with his confident, compelling flow on the first verse, focusing on a dysfunctional relationship.  As the aforementioned lyrics suggest, he’s had ample opportunities to leave but just can’t seem to exit.  He later adds:

“I can’t seem to find out what’s the issue
See your face on my Explore and then I miss you
Yeah, I said I was finished fucking wit you
I said I hate the fucking way I always [miss you].”

Going back to ‘bear, his catchy, memorable is one of the biggest selling points of this record, NO CAP!

“Yeah, I hate the way, the way I always miss you
Yeah, I know I’m crazy, but you’re sick, too
Even after everything we’ve been through
Thought I was the one with all the issues.”

Final Thoughts 💭

We can all agree that G-Eazy is best when he’s spitting bars, right? While “Hate the Way” isn’t earth shattering, it’s a respectable and relatable record.  Many of us have been in relationships we shouldn’t have yet struggled to move on.  That’s pretty much the size of it.  Ultimately, “Hate the Way” is sound and enjoyable.
