While he doesn’t ‘move the needle’ in the least on “Tycoon,” Grammy-winning rapper Future continues to flex like a boss.
“Starin’ at the candle / Feel the pain on me, nigga, it don’t matter / Get my currency exchanged, got my bands up.” Okay… Would it be a generalization if the comment was made that once you heard one Future song, you’ve heard them all? Perhaps, but, at this point, those who have been listening to the Grammy-winning rapper know what to expect. I say all of this to say, if you went into “Tycoon” expecting something drastically different or unfamiliar from the rapper, well, you’ll be utterly disappointed.
As the title would suggest, “Tycoon” is all flex. Following the aforementioned introduction, Future serves up a chorus that finds folks hating on him and envious of his drip. His confidence is through the roof, so much so that he asserts, “I know I ain’t gon’ be deceased ‘til I’m like eighty…” Hmm, that’s sort of hard to say, right? On the verses, we get much of the same, tried-and-true, autotune heavy rapper. It doesn’t take long on the first verse for him to reference Actavis, haters, and the repercussions of hating him. On the second verse, there’s more violence (“Twin choppers on me, they my favorite”), a clever Ghost reference (“Catch me rollin’ in the Ghost, Patrick Swayze”), and of course, Lil Mexico (“I came from Lil Mexico, a nigga made it”). All of this coming over respectable, though not game changing production by DY and Wheezy.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Tycoon” is a respectable, totally solid Future record. He does nothing particularly objectionable, nor does he move the needle. At this point, listening to “Tycoon,” my big takeaway is that the rapper has shown the full deck of cards. Where does he go from here – how does he step up his game and surprise us? That, for me, is what I’d like to see him explore next.
