Hip hop artists French Montana and Tory Lanez collaborate on “Cold,” a single that lacks substance and isn’t just ‘cold’ but utterly frigid.
French Montana and Tory Lanez, sigh. Two hip-hop musicians with which I have mixed feelings about generally, if I’m keeping it 100. French Montana has had some hits, but, his assertions about going ‘neck and neck’ with Kendrick Lamar – umm, no sir! As for Tory Lanez, he too also has some hits, but I found myself a bit disillusioned after his 2018 album, Memories Don’t Die, particularly as the Canadian rapper/singer seemed to struggle with establishing his own identity. Regardless, he’s done well for himself as far as debuting high on the Billboard 200, so he deserves credit there. Moving on, both musicians come together for a single, “Cold,” which I personally find to be absolutely frigid, and that’s no compliment.
“Cold” is produced by ArmoTunez and LayZbeats, both of which provide French and Tory with a solid foundation. The production doesn’t blow me away by any means, but again, it’s solid; sound. What I’m saying is, there’s no problem with the instrumental. As for the script itself, well, it’s quite familiar, as both artists focus on a bad girl, with some drug and drippy references thrown in. French handles the moderately catchy chorus, though he definitely overreaches with iterations of the word bitch throughout:
“From the front, from the side, from the back Man, that bitch cold Pinky ring, nice watch on my neck Man, that bitch gold Quarter brick, half a brick, buss it down Sell that bitch whole Whip it up, back it up, send it out, man that gets old.”
At the end of the chorus, Tory Lanez sings in his signature falsetto, “Fuck me like you love me,” before dropping an unapologetic, melodic verse. “Pussy can’t get no wetter than this, there’s no debating,” he asserts, continuing, “Killing that pussy, I had to get it cremated.” Yeah, that’s ‘overkill’ for sure. Of course, French Montana spits on the second verse, concentrating on drip mostly, but he gets down too (“Heh! We manage in the car, the garage like a flex show”). So deep.
Final Thoughts
So, I’m still not over the fact that French Montana asserts he measures up to Kendrick Lamar. A record like “Cold” certainly doesn’t show it by my estimations, but to each his own. At best, this collaboration between him and Tory Lanez is merely okay. From my perspective, I think it’s subpar, but some folks may dig it.
