3.5 out of 5 stars

The rollout for MC4, the forthcoming album by French Montana has been rough.  For an MC who didn’t “set the charts on fire” with 2013 effort Excuse My French, he needs a breakthrough.  After compelling with the fun (if empty) “No Shopping” featuring Drake, French Montana returns solo with latest single, “2 Times.”

French Montana “flexes” before the track even establishes itself.

“Came fresh cold out the strip, right / keep it 100 with my clique…”

This is excerpted from the hook, which follows.  “2 Times” features aggressive, slick production work. Set in a minor key, malice is clearly on French’s mind.

It is actually great to hear French Montana by himself.  He’s an MC who clearly has work to do to solidify his status in the game.  “2 Times” is no rap masterwork, but there’s plenty to like.  Among those is an empty, yet irresistible hook:

“Don’t be talkin’ bout me or my b*tch, right / came fresh cold out the strip, right / keep it 100 with my clique, right…If the p*ssy good, hit it two times”

Final Thoughts

“2 Times” is a good club track considering it lacks substance.  Throughout its course, French Montana is most concerned about getting some and if it is good, then, “hit it two times.” Profundity isn’t the M.O., but French does soundly holding down the track solo.
