Ah, it’s time to get cozy and totally cover up! In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS separates itself from a related column, Head 2 Head only highlighting the musician who covers, as opposed to the original/most famous performer. COVERS is open to both established musicians and musicians who may not be as well-known. In the 15th edition of COVERS (2023),
Frankie J delivers a compelling rendition of
“Obsesion (No Es Amor)”, originally performed by bachata band
Aventura.
“Amor, no es amor (If this ain’t love) / Then what am I feeling? (Then what am I feeling?) / What am I doing wrong?” Unfortunately, sometimes, certain artists come and go quickly from the mainstream. The handsome and talented
Frankie J had a nice run in the early 00s, particularly with the song,
“Obsesion (No Es Amor).” After a while, however, the R&B singer seemed to vanish, sigh. “Obsesion” appeared on his platinum certified sophomore album,
The One. “Obsesion” was also certified as a platinum single, peaking at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Of course, it is also worth noting that “Obsesion (No Es Amor)” is a cover
! That’s right, American bachata band
Aventura, featuring lead vocals by
Romeo Santos, and assisted by
Judy Santos, dropped it first, though exclusively in Spanish!
Helping Frankie J with his obsession was another Mexican American musician who experienced a lucrative run,
Baby Bash. The theme of the song is being obsessed by the four-letter-word, LOVE. Clearly, Frankie J is all sorts of crazy because of this obsession (“Just thinkin’ ‘bout you, baby, got me twisted in the head / And I don’t know how to take it”). He’s so locked-in on her he admits in the second verse, “Now I don’t care if you got a man.” Woo! As for Baby Bash, “Shorty got me feelin’ serene /… Got your boy feeling supreme / … Baby, you so damn independent / Loving everything you representing.” Enough said – the OBSESSION is lit
